The WEG is increasing its production capacity at its Betim facility, located in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, with a total investment of 34 million reais. The creation of solutions for generation, distribution, and transmission of energy is the main focus of this unit, which also manufactures reactors and transformers.
The Minas Gerais unit, acquired by WEG in 2020, is responsible for the production of large transformers with voltages of up to 800 kilovolts (kV). The investment will result in the doubling of the facility’s capacity (the company does not disclose volumes) and the addition of two lines of equipment: one for mobile substations and another for the repair and repowering of transformers.
WEG Has a Significant Influence in the Brazilian Electricity Sector
Carlos Diether Prinz, the CEO of WEG, said in an interview that the company’s goal is to further expand its influence in Brazil’s electric sector, where it is already a prominent supplier. WEG’s presence in this market is already significant.

Due to this large investment, WEG’s factory in Betim will have the capacity to repair transformers starting from 30 MVA from all manufacturers available in the market. Moreover, thanks to its prime location, it will be able to serve the Southeast, North, and Northeast regions.
WEG’s Investment in Betim Will Double the Production Capacity of the Unit, Creating New Jobs
So far, the only WEG unit in Brazil responsible for providing this type of service is located in Blumenau/SC. As a result of the adjustments at the Betim Unit, the Santa Catarina unit will only handle the Southern region, while Betim will be responsible for meeting the demand from the other regions of Brazil.
WEG’s factory in Betim has a built area of 32,500 square meters, world-class equipment and facilities, and a workforce of about 350 people. After the completion of the investments, the unit will have the capacity to rehabilitate around 36 transformers per year, which will require more labor, generating many job opportunities for Betim and Belo Horizonte.
The investment in Betim is the second announced in recent weeks, aimed at increasing the company’s presence in the electric sector. Last week, WEG had announced new investments in its Balteau factory in Itajubá, a unit specialized in the production of transformers for instruments and measurement sets, which is set to undergo an expansion and modernization soon.
