An Impressive Discovery: NASA Has Identified a Star Eater in the Middle of the Universe, a Phenomenon That Is Intriguing Scientists Around the World.

A team of scientists has made a remarkable discovery, using NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory to investigate unique cosmic phenomena in the Universe. Two supermassive black holes, located over a billion light-years away, have been identified as the protagonists of extraordinary events.

These cosmic giants, orbiting a merging galaxy, are engaged in an orbital dance that causes disturbances in a nearby gas cloud.

An Enigma of the Universe Called AT 2021hdr

The discovery began in March 2021, with the observation of an event called AT 2021hdr by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in California. Initially treated as a common supernova, the phenomenon soon revealed intriguing patterns. Recurring explosions, occurring every 60 to 90 days, suggested unusual behavior.

“It is something really strange,” stated Lorena Hernández-García, the lead researcher of the study. According to her, the black holes are consuming gas as they spin, generating characteristic fluctuations in light.

These black holes, located in the galaxy 2MASX J21240027+3409114, have a combined mass 40 million times greater than that of the Sun. Orbiting 16 billion miles apart, they complete an orbital cycle in 130 days. Still, their merger is inevitable and should occur in the next 70 thousand years.

Light, Gas, and Gravity

The peculiar behavior of the light emitted by the black holes is a direct reflection of the gravitational disturbances affecting the surrounding gas cloud. The Swift Observatory has been monitoring fluctuations in ultraviolet and X-ray light since November 2022.

Scientists explain that the observed variations occur due to the gravitational disruption of the gas cloud. “Each revolution strips away part of the gas,” Hernández-García explained. This creates regions of heated and dense gas that emit light with varying intensities.

A Galaxy in Transformation

A fascinating detail is that the host galaxy is merging with another nearby galaxy. This interaction may influence the movements of the black holes, adding an extra level of complexity to the system.

According to the researchers, studying these periodic eruptions offers important clues about the evolution of black holes and the dynamics of their host galaxies. This data helps refine theories about the behavior of black holes and the role of galactic mergers.

Swift: An Ever-Updating View

Twenty years after its launch, the Swift Observatory continues to play a crucial role in astronomy. “It’s incredible to see how much new science Swift is still contributing to the community,” said S. Bradley Cenko, the lead investigator of the project.

The future promises more discoveries. Hernández-García plans to deepen studies on the light curve of AT 2021hdr, seeking to better understand the models that explain the interaction between black holes and their galaxies.
