Space Agency Study, in Partnership with German Scientists, Investigates Deep Phenomenon in the Atlantic Ocean That Intrigues Scientists

Scientists from NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have identified a vast and mysterious gravitational anomaly located in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of Africa. As detailed by Unknown Facts, the discovery, made by satellites, reveals strange patterns on the ocean floor, with bands of reduced and increased gravity extending for thousands of kilometers.

This phenomenon raises complex questions about the planet’s internal processes, far below the surface. The investigation seeks to understand what is causing this disturbance and whether it is connected to another known anomaly in the same region, which is magnetic in nature and directly affects satellites and even the International Space Station (ISS).

What Did the NASA Satellites Find?

The initial detection occurred in 2007, through the satellites of the Grace mission (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment). According to Unknown Facts, these satellites captured an unexpected pattern in the depths of the Atlantic: a band of reduced gravity next to another of increased gravity, forming a “signal” that extended over more than 7,000 kilometers.

What intrigued the NASA researchers the most was the coincidence of this gravitational signal with geomagnetic agitation observed in the same area. The conclusion was immediate: it was not just a simple change in the ocean surface. The phenomenon must have originated from something much deeper, located at the heart of the planet.

The Difference from the Famous Magnetic Anomaly

It is crucial to differentiate this gravitational anomaly from the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA), although they may be related. The SAMA, discovered in 1958, is an area where the Earth’s magnetic field is significantly weaker. In it, the Van Allen radiation belt, which protects the planet, “dives” closer to the surface.

According to Unknown Facts, this magnetic weakness allows solar energy particles to more easily reach satellites in low orbit. Spacecraft instruments can fail when passing through there, and the International Space Station (ISS) itself needed to receive a special coating to handle extra exposure to radiation in this region. The origin of the SAMA is also in the Earth’s interior, linked to the movement of molten iron in the core.

Bridgmanite: The Key to the Mystery in the Earth’s Mantle

The explanation for the gravitational anomaly (and its possible connection to the magnetic one) seems to lie nearly 3,000 kilometers deep. Unknown Facts points to an abundant yet little-known mineral at the surface: Bridgmanite. This mineral is crucial for understanding the dynamic changes of our planet.

Under the extreme pressures and temperatures of the mantle (the layer between the crust and the core), Bridgmanite undergoes a surprising transformation. It changes its crystal structure to magnesium silicate, drastically altering its density. In practice, it is an internal “metamorphosis” that redistributes large masses of rock material in a matter of a few years, a blink of an eye in geological terms.

This rapid change in mantle minerals seems to be the true source of the gravitational anomalies detected by NASA satellites. Unknown Facts also mentions that this transformation is linked to a phenomenon called “diomagnetic jerk”, a sudden jolt in the magnetic field, suggesting that the mantle and the liquid core “communicate” in ways that science is just beginning to decipher.

Why Is This Discovery So Important?

The research by NASA and its partners reinforces that Earth is not a static planet. On the contrary, it is a living and dynamic geological organism. Complex underground processes are constantly influencing not only the gravity we experience but also the magnetic field that protects us from space radiation.

For scientists, deciphering this puzzle is like opening a window into the heart of the planet. Understanding how and how often these masses redistribute is fundamental. According to Unknown Facts, this knowledge may have direct impacts on the understanding of tectonic plate movement, volcanic activity, and potentially even long-term climate changes.

The discovery by NASA about the gravitational anomaly off the African coast is a fascinating reminder that, despite all advancements in space exploration, the greatest mysteries may literally be beneath our feet. The study of Bridgmanite and the complex dance between the mantle and core of the Earth is just beginning.

The complexity of our planet’s interior is astonishing. Did you imagine that the magnetic field and gravity could change so quickly because of deep minerals? What else do you think science still needs to discover about Earth? Share your thoughts in the comments!
