Surprising dimensions, heavy engineering, and a comparison capable of arousing worldwide curiosity surround a monument erected over Cochabamba. Installed at one of the highest points of the Bolivian city, it transformed the landscape, strengthened local tourism, and holds details little known outside the Andean region.
A colossal figure of Jesus Christ, with 40.44 meters in height and about 2.2 thousand tons, dominates the landscape of Cochabamba, Bolivia, and surpasses the Christ the Redeemer when both monuments are measured in full, from base to top.
Erected in steel and concrete at the top of Cerro San Pedro, the work took seven years to complete and occupies an area situated approximately 2,840 meters above sea level, a condition that further enhances its visual impact.
Known as Cristo de la Concordia, the monument opens its arms over the city and can be seen from different points of the Cochabamba valley, where it has become one of the images most associated with the Bolivian city.

Cristo de la Concordia is 40.44 meters tall

The approximate weight of 2.2 thousand tons results from the large amount of steel and concrete used in the structure, essential materials to support the figure and ensure stability in an area exposed to the conditions of Cerro San Pedro.
When the comparison includes the bases, the Christ the Redeemer, in Rio de Janeiro, reaches 38 meters, while the Bolivian set reaches 40.44 meters, establishing a difference of 2.44 meters between the two South American religious constructions.
Even without considering the pedestals, the advantage remains with the work in Cochabamba, as the Cristo de la Concordia stands 34.20 meters tall, compared to the 30 meters of the statue installed atop Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.
This difference helps explain why the Bolivian sculpture attracts attention even in photographs taken from a long distance, especially when it appears isolated atop the hill, without similarly sized buildings around to reduce its apparent scale.
Construction of the monument took seven years
Started on July 12, 1987, and completed on November 20, 1994, the construction spanned a little over seven years of work, a period dedicated to the pedestal, internal structure, cladding, and circulation areas.
The project was developed by brothers César and Walter Terrazas Pardo, sculptors and architects from Cochabamba, while the direction of the work was the responsibility of architect Mario Moscoso Villanueva, who was in charge of leading the technical execution of the monumental structure.
To transform the design into a construction capable of remaining exposed on Cerro San Pedro, the team had to combine engineering and sculpture solutions, respecting the proportions of the body, arms, clothing, and face of the figure.
Designed with a partially hollow interior, the statue houses stairs that allow movement through higher areas, as well as small openings used as windows facing Cochabamba and the valley that extends around the hill.
This feature transforms the monument itself into an observation point, allowing the visit not to be limited to external contemplation and also to include an internal experience connected to the urban and mountainous landscape of the Bolivian region.
Open arms symbolize unity and welcome
Among the most striking elements of the sculpture are the outstretched arms, a position adopted to represent welcome, protection, and integration, concepts directly associated with the name Cristo de la Concordia and the symbolic proposal of the religious work.
Referring to the idea of unity, the word concord also connects to the way the figure seems to embrace the landscape below the hill, creating an immediate visual relationship between the monument and the city of Cochabamba.
Located east of the central area, Cerro San Pedro places the structure approximately 265 meters above the city, a difference in altitude that reinforces its presence on the horizon and enhances the visibility of the monument in various Cochabamba neighborhoods.
Combined with the natural altitude of the region, this position brings the Cristo de la Concordia to about 2,840 meters above sea level, a condition that helps explain the sensation of visual dominance over the entire valley.
Cerro San Pedro offers access and view of Cochabamba
Access to the top of the hill occurs via different paths, as visitors can use vehicles, climb the stairs, or arrive via the cable car connected to the city, an alternative that offers a gradual approach to the monumental sculpture.
During the journey, the image grows in the field of vision until its proportions are revealed more clearly, especially near the pedestal, where the scale of the body, arms, and head becomes more evident to those visiting the site.
Being installed in an elevated area and exceeding 40 meters in height, the figure also serves as a reference point within Cochabamba, especially in areas without tall buildings or natural barriers in front of Cerro San Pedro.
Monument is linked to the visit of John Paul II
Besides the visual impact, the monument is linked to the memory of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cochabamba, which took place in 1988, when the city was preparing to receive the pontiff and was consolidating the proposal to erect the work.
In the following years, construction progressed until it was completed and opened as a local religious symbol, becoming part of celebrations, guided tours, and tourist activities promoted in the region where the Christ became a permanent element of the landscape.
Due to its dimensions, the sculpture had to be treated as an engineering work, not just an artistic endeavor, as steel forms an essential part of the internal support, while concrete makes up the external volume of the figure.
The combination of these materials allowed the shaping of the body, garments, face, and arms, preserving the necessary proportions so that the image maintained visual coherence even when observed from different distances and angles.
Viewed from the pedestal, the head of the monument has dimensions comparable to a multi-story building, although, observed from the center of Cochabamba, it seems integrated with the body and the scale of the hill where it was installed.
As the visitor approaches the base, however, details once diluted by distance begin to occupy a large part of the field of vision and reveal more evidently the real scale of the Bolivian structure.
Bolivian Christ surpasses the Redeemer in total height
The comparison with Christ the Redeemer does not diminish the importance of the Brazilian monument, internationally recognized as a symbol of Rio de Janeiro and the country, but reveals the lesser-known dimension of the work built atop Cochabamba.
Outside the more popular international itineraries, the Cristo de la Concordia remains less publicized, although it concentrates religious activities, guided tours, and tourist actions that take advantage of both the sculpture and the panoramic view offered by Cerro San Pedro.
Around the base, the space functions as a viewpoint for neighborhoods, mountains, and different areas of the valley, while the figure remains as a central element of the landscape and reinforces the connection between tourism, religiosity, and urban identity.
Its 40.44 meters are approximately equivalent to the height of a building with more than ten floors, a perception enhanced by the absence of other structures of the same scale at the top of the hill and by the natural altitude of the Bolivian city.
Combining height, weight, and a privileged location, the monument stands out among the great religious sculptures of South America, especially for concentrating 2.2 thousand tons of materials at an elevated and visible point from different areas of the city.
