The development of the prototype of the electric truck for mining has been completed with the support of key mining clients participating in Caterpillar’s Early Learner program, which includes various electrification agreements established between Caterpillar and companies such as BHP, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Corporation, Rio Tinto, and Teck Resources, according to the website petronotícias.
According to the president of the group responsible for the Resource Industries sector, Denise Johnson: “Our global team has developed this electric mining truck at an accelerated pace to help our customers meet their sustainability commitments. This demonstration is a significant milestone, and we are excited for these trucks to begin operating in our customers’ mines around the world in the near future.”

The Early Learner program, launched in 2021, aims to accelerate the development and validation of Caterpillar’s battery electric mining trucks at the mines of participating clients.

Early Learner customers gathered to watch the live demonstration of the battery electric mining truck prototype from Caterpillar on a seven-kilometer route at the company’s testing ground in Arizona, United States.
The Giant Potential of the New Mining Truck
During the presentation of the mining truck prototype, Caterpillar monitored over 1,100 data channels, gathering 110,000 data points per second to validate the simulation and engineering modeling capabilities. Fully loaded at its rated capacity, the vehicle reached a top speed of 60 km/h.
When loaded, it traveled one kilometer uphill at 12 km/h, while the equipment also performed a one-kilometer run downhill at 10%, capturing energy that would normally be lost as heat and regenerating that energy for the battery.
