Researchers Develop New Solar Panels That Can Generate Energy at Night. On a Large Scale, Solar Energy Project Could Revolutionize the Entire Industry. 

It may seem impossible, but researchers at Stanford University are currently developing solar panels that produce energy at night. With this new technology used on a large scale, the disadvantage of solar panels could still generate more renewable energy than conventional panels.

In Brazil, solar panels are not commonly seen in regular homes, but their use in the industrial sector has been expanding significantly, mainly due to the fact that they offer greater environmental incentives to users or preservation goals that need to be met.

Thus, new technologies that allow for greater utilization of this type of energy harvesting could significantly impact the future, generating benefits for the environment, as solar energy is a great path towards clean energy and a sustainable future. These discoveries about solar panels were published in the journal Applied Physics Letters in April of last year.

Research goes beyond the development of new solar panels, but also shows that panels are already in use, installed and operating, and can be modified to receive this update and generate energy even during cloudy times and at night.

This upgrade process for solar panels is called radiative cooling. When the sun sets, the Earth cools down, releasing heat into the air, thus creating a temperature difference between the air and the surface of the solar panels.

Study with New Solar Panels is Advancing

According to the university’s scientists, by installing thermoelectric generators on the solar panels, the model will harness energy generated by radiative cooling. It is important to remember that innovations like this have emerged before, such as the technology from researchers at the University of California, called anti-solar panel.

These technologies have not been widely publicized and disseminated because the estimated energy generation is still low, about 25% of what they could generate on a typical sunny day. However, research is advancing, and the more options are created, the more the sector will progress, especially when solar panels become more accessible and a good portion of the population can choose this technology.

Other Technologies That Promise to Generate Energy at Night

In October of last year, scientists from the University of Houston in the U.S. created a new solar energy system capable of capturing solar energy all day long, 7 days a week, breaking all limits and restrictions previously set for all photovoltaic devices sold on the market.

According to the co-author of the study, mechanical engineering professor Bo Zhao, the new technology mitigated the limits that exist between the amount of solar energy that can be collected daily and what is actually utilized, given that energy generation is only possible during the day when the sun emits light and the solar panel operates at its maximum capacity.

In addition to this research, in May of the same year, researchers from the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia, developed a technology capable of generating solar energy at night. The equipment operates through a novelty called night solar energy. This technology utilizes the heat radiated as infrared light, in the same way that the Earth cools by radiating heat into space at night. The study was led by a team of scientists from the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering at the University.
