The Work Routine Could Change Forever With The Bill Proposed By Congresswoman Erika Hilton, Who Wants To End The 6×1 Shift And Give Brazilian Workers A New Chance For Work-Life Balance.

The physical and mental exhaustion has become an increasingly present reality in the daily lives of Brazilian workers, who deal with long hours and little rest.

A survey by the International Stress Management Association (Isma-BR) revealed that Brazil ranks second in the global burnout ranking, a condition related to excessive work and psychological strain.

It is no surprise, therefore, that the reduction of working hours is a topic of intense debate in Congress and on social media.

Recently, Federal Congresswoman Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) presented a Proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) aimed at revising the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT).

The proposal aims to reduce working hours and, mainly, to end the 6×1 shift, which currently establishes that the worker has only one day of rest after six consecutive workdays.

This model is common in sectors such as retail, restaurants, and telemarketing, where service demands do not pause.

Understand the 6×1 Model

The 6×1 shift allows companies to organize their employees’ work schedule for up to six working days and one rest day, totaling up to 44 hours per week.

Although the CLT defines that the daily work limit is eight hours, many professionals have to forgo weekends and, in some cases, work seven consecutive days.

Regarding breaks, the law requires that the worker have intervals of at least 15 minutes for shifts of four to six hours, and one to two hours for shifts longer than six hours.

The model has been pointed out by unions and social movements as one of the causes of chronic exhaustion among workers.

The PEC and The Beyond Work Movement (VAT)

Erika Hilton’s initiative has the support of the Beyond Work Movement (VAT), led by Rick Azevedo, a worker who gained attention by sharing his exhaustion with the work routine on TikTok.

With online support, Rick launched the petition “For a Brazil That Goes Beyond Work,” which already has thousands of signatures.

The VAT’s idea is to propose a four-day workweek and three days off, based on the 4 Day Week Global model, which advocates for maintaining full pay for 80% of the hours worked.

According to the organizers, the goal of the petition is to balance the professional and personal lives of workers.

Is the 4×3 Shift Viable for Brazil?

The VAT is not the only group advocating for the reduction of working hours.

Various movements, including Antitrampo and Tang Ping, have gained popularity in Brazil and abroad.

However, the adaptation challenges for a 4×3 model are significant, especially in essential sectors like health and safety, where operations cannot be interrupted.

Companies and experts highlight that reducing the number of working days could imply extra costs, an increase in the workforce, and operational adjustments, especially in areas with high service demand.

The debate about how to implement this transition effectively, without sacrificing productivity, is one of the main discussion points.

Pandemic-Inspired Movements

The Covid-19 pandemic triggered a series of movements that question the current work model.

The Antitrampo forum, for example, gathered thousands of workers dissatisfied with abusive conditions and inspired actions such as “quiet quitting”, where employees began to do the minimum required to preserve their mental health.

Another example is the “Lazy Job”, in which young people opt for more flexible and less stressful jobs, seeking a balance between work and personal life.

What Do Authorities Say About The Work Shift?

The Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, expressed support for the debate on working hours, stating that it will be up to Congress to decide on the proposal.

In a Senate hearing, he emphasized that Parliament needs to reflect on the ideal time to review the current regulations.

However, he pointed out that a change of this magnitude requires wide participation and that the impact on different sectors must be carefully considered.

Challenges and Expectations for The Future of Work in Brazil

Despite the challenges, the push for a work hours reform is a reality that has gained momentum in recent years.

Movements like VAT continue to pressure for changes, and society remains divided on how to balance the needs of employers and the rights of workers.

Erika Hilton’s proposal, along with popular pressure and the support of social movements, could mark the beginning of a silent revolution in the country’s labor laws.

And you, what do you think about the end of the 6×1 shift? Do you believe that the 4×3 model could be the solution to improve workers’ quality of life? Share your opinion in the comments and join this debate!
