With Investment from ENC Energy Brasil, Power Generation from the Plant Using Biogas Is Expected to Start in the First Half of 2022
A biogas plant expansion will be inaugurated in the city of Santana do Paraíso, in the Rio Doce region of Minas Gerais state, using a distributed generation model, which refers to energy generated through small-scale renewable sources close to the consumption site. The plant was installed by ENC Energy Brasil with an investment of approximately R$ 5.5 million. Biogas Plant Expansion
The new engine is expected to be inaugurated in the first half of 2022. The biogas plant in Minas Gerais state, which uses organic material generated from landfills to produce energy, belongs to ENC Energy Brasil, with management by Órigo. The new engine will involve an investment of R$ 5.5 million, adding to the R$ 6 million already invested in the project, which has been operational since last year.
According to the company, the structure generates electricity for the region through distributed generation, powered by small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. The process for converting energy from biogas at the plant occurs through anaerobic decomposition of landfill waste, producing methane and carbon dioxide gases. The mixture of these gases forms biogas, which is transformed into electricity through heat.

The Process to Generate Energy at the Facility in Minas Gerais
“The process is similar to that of natural gas, but biogas is produced from waste. We are even studying a pilot project so that in 2022 we can also convert this gas into biomethane and inject it into gas distributors,” explains the president of ENC Energy Brasil, Rodrigo Lopes Missel.
The technology is about 25 times less polluting than the carbon dioxide generated from burning waste, another method of producing energy from trash. However, according to the president of ENC, biogas is not only more sustainable but also enhances the value of landfills, which receive proper treatment, unlike dumps used in waste-to-energy plants. “Obviously, this is a cycle that boosts job creation for both the landfill and the plant. We employ 3 people at the plant and have a cycle of businesses in the region that benefit from purchasing parts and supplies. It’s a truly virtuous chain,” he states.
According to him, the expansion of the plant in Santana do Paraíso is expected to occur between June and July next year. The project is awaiting approval for the construction of a transmission line by Cemig, which is expected to occur by November this year, and the new engine for the biogas plant is expected to arrive between February and March 2022.
