With the Launch of the 2.2 Turbodiesel Engine in 2024, Stellantis Brings News for the Fiat Toro and the Jeep Commander, Promising Power and Efficiency. This Change Signifies an Important Step for the Group, Which Replaces the Old 2.0 and Expands the Capacity of the Models to Face Competitors.
The Brazilian pickup market has never been so heated, and the Fiat Toro promises to be the center of attention in 2024.
Starting in January, the model will feature the new 2.2 Turbodiesel engine, which recently debuted in the Fiat Rampage, a high-performance pickup from the brand.
With this, the Toro aims to establish its territory and reinforce its presence in a competitive segment, saying goodbye to the 2.0 Turbodiesel engine that has been used in Brazil since 2015.

Less than a Tera TSI, up to 710 km of range and charging in 9 minutes: the new BYD Song Ultra expands the Chinese brand’s bet on increasingly faster, more technological, and competitively priced electric SUVs.

With a 1.0 engine producing 75 hp and costing less than R$ 70,000, Fiat’s car returns to the podium as the cheapest in the country; a temporary promotion for the 2026 Like version reduces the price of the Fiat Mobi.

With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.

With a 293.5 cm³ engine and a range of up to 400 km with a 14.1-liter tank, the Honda CB 300F Twister 2026 has up to 24.7 hp, an initial price of R$ 25,150, and already exceeds R$ 29,000 in the Fipe Table.
The news also extends to other models from the Stellantis group, which will follow Fiat’s lead to update their engines, such as the Jeep Commander, which has already announced the adoption of the 2.2 engine in the Overland version.
What Changes with the New 2.2 Turbodiesel Engine?
The introduction of the 2.2 Turbodiesel engine is not just an aesthetic update.
The Toro and the Commander will now have a power unit capable of delivering an impressive 200 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and torque of 45.9 kgfm from 1,500 rpm.
According to Stellantis, this represents a significant increase in performance and efficiency compared to the old 2.0 engine and promises to meet an audience that seeks both robustness and economy.
The novelty, which should attract the attention of enthusiasts and industry experts, arrives to renew the segment of SUVs and pickups with diesel engines.
According to sources linked to the brand, the new 2.2 engine offers a smoother driving experience, even on uneven terrains, as the power is distributed evenly between the axles, which also provides greater stability and safety at the wheel.
Commander Also Benefits from the Innovation
The Jeep Commander, the seven-seater SUV produced in Pernambuco, is another model set to receive the new engine in 2024.
After the collective year-end holidays, Stellantis will begin production of the new Overland version with the updated engine, keeping the diesel option only in this configuration.
Just like the Toro, the Commander will feature a nine-speed automatic transmission and a 14% longer differential, a factor that, according to specialists, helps reduce engine rotation at different speeds, increasing fuel efficiency without compromising 4×4 traction capability.
This feature, which also debuted in the Rampage pickup, offers an improved experience on steep climbs and descents due to the Hill Descent Control.
Stellantis Prepares Ground for the Titano 2026 with Mechanical Innovations
Stellantis already has plans outlined for the launch of the Fiat Titano 2026, a pickup that will be manufactured in Argentina and will also feature the 2.2 Turbodiesel engine in its range of versions.
Expected for the first quarter of 2025, the new model will be equipped with the same 2.2 engine but will come with an update to the automatic transmission, changing from six to eight speeds.
The six-speed manual option will remain available, ensuring that the Titano caters to both those who prefer an automatic transmission and those who prioritize manual driving.
This configuration will be aimed at the versions with 4×2 and 4×4 traction, options that have been traditional in the Fiat lineup for the Latin American market.
According to internal sources at Stellantis, the intention is to keep the Titano aligned with performance and efficiency trends, characteristics highly valued by the public in the region.
Questions Surround the Future of the Compass with Diesel Engine
One unresolved issue involves the Jeep Compass, another popular model from Stellantis.
Brazilian dealerships have already stopped accepting orders for the Compass 2.0 Turbodiesel, raising uncertainties about the future of the model with a diesel engine.
If the Compass receives the new 2.2 Turbodiesel, it is speculated that this will only occur in the Limited version, which would maintain the engine exclusively to cater to a specific audience demand.
So far, Stellantis has not confirmed whether the Compass will adopt the new engine, leaving in the air a possible restructuring of the brand’s diesel lineup.
This potential adjustment may reflect on the sales strategy and the options offered to the Brazilian market in 2024.
Power and Efficiency in Favor of the Consumer
The addition of the 2.2 Turbodiesel engine promises to elevate the level of Stellantis vehicles in Brazil and Latin America.
Models such as the Jeep Commander, Fiat Toro, and the future Titano represent the brand’s bet on offering vehicles with powerful and efficient engines, catering to demanding consumers who seek not only strength but also adequate fuel consumption.
The move to replace the old 2.0 with the 2.2 Turbodiesel marks a transitional phase for Stellantis in Brazil, where the brand seeks to strengthen its position in the diesel SUVs and pickups market, a sector that is growing.
Now, it remains to be seen how the Brazilian public will respond to these changes and what the next steps will be for Stellantis in its journey of innovation.
