The Offshore Fields Represented 97.9% of Oil Production in January and 86% of Natural Gas Production
In January 2023, the total production was 4.175 million boe/d (3.274 million bbl/d of oil and 143.215 million m3/d of natural gas). Oil prices increased by 6.5% compared to the previous month and 8% compared to January 2022.
The previous oil production record was set in October 2022, when 3.148 million bbl/d were produced. There was a 2.2% increase in natural gas production compared to December 2022 and a 4.2% increase compared to the same month the previous year.

Pre-Salt
In January, pre-salt production was 3.168 million boe/d, equivalent to 75.9% of Brazil’s total production. Through 141 wells, 2.489 million barrels of oil per day (bbl/d) and 107.0 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d) were extracted. The month-over-month increase was 6.1%, while the year-over-year increase was 8.8%. Additionally, in October 2022, pre-salt production reached a record of 3.142 million boe/d, which was also a new record.
Utilization of Natural Gas
The natural gas utilization rate was 97.1% in January. 50.96 million m3/d entered the market and 4.15 million m3/d left the system as waste.
Increases of 11.8% compared to the previous month and 28.3% compared to January 2022 can be observed in the amount of gas burned this year.
The Location Where the Product Is Made
The offshore fields represented 97.9% of oil production in January and 86% of natural gas production. The vast majority (89.98%) of the oil came from fields controlled by Petrobras either independently or in partnership with other companies. There were 5,661 producing wells, comprising 508 offshore and 5,153 onshore.
Fields and Infrastructure
The Tupi field, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, was the largest producer of oil and gas in January, with production of 804.4 thousand bbl/d (barrels of oil per day) and 38.54 million m3/d (million cubic feet per day), respectively. The FPSO Guanabara was the main oil and gas production facility in the Mero integrated field, pumping 170.732 thousand bbl/d of oil and 10.97 million m3/d of natural gas.
