On Last Thursday (24), in Bologna, Northern Italy, the Fourth Fastest Supercomputer on Earth, Named “Leonardo”, Was Launched. Leonardo Is a Tribute to the Genius Leonardo da Vinci, Famous for His Artwork and Inventions.

It Is Hard to Imagine a More Magnificent Achievement in Human History than Computer Science. There Are So Many Advantages of New Technologies for Society That Every New Launch of Challenging Projects Will Surely Be Loved. The Fourth Fastest Supercomputer in the World Is One of the Three Pre-Exascale (Which Measures Performance) Systems Announced by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and Gave Europe a 50/50 Chance of Being One of the Most Powerful Supercomputers on Earth.

The Most Powerful Supercomputer in the World Has a Capacity of 250 Quadrillion Operations per Second and a Performance of 174.7 Petaflops, Placing It Fourth on the List of the Most Powerful in the World. The Cineca Consortium, Composed of 69 Universities, 27 Public Institutions, and Two Ministries in Italy, Will Manage the Supercomputer.

Moreover, It Will Play a Leading Role in the Creation of Solutions for the Fight Against Climate Change and Will Be Used in the Development of Applications in Areas Such as Artificial Intelligence, Medicine, Renewable Energy, and Bioengineering.

The Incredible Numbers of This Supercomputer:

In Summary, the Numbers of This Powerful and Fast System Are:

  • 3,500 Intel Xeon Processors;
  • 14,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs;
  • 4,992 Intel Ice Lake Compute Nodes;
  • 249 PFLOPS;
  • 100 Petabytes of Storage.

Besides the Impressive Numbers, What Stands Out Is the Fact That the Machine Has Quantum Processing Upgrades.

Thanks to Its MSA (Modular Supercomputing Architecture), This Supercomputer Can Be Physically Connected to a Quantum Computer via a Wired Network in an Integration of Co-Location Called “Co-Location”, Where It Will Be Possible to Share Much Information at High Speed.
