Old Toyota Car Gains Highlight in the Automotive Market in 2025. Get to Know the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16v, Toyota Car That Goes Up to 15 Km/L for Less Than R$ 30 Thousand.

The Toyota lineup in the 1990s is much more remembered in Brazil for models like the midsize Corolla and the Hilux pickup. However, the Japanese brand also offered here models that stand out from the conservative image that the Asian company has built over the decades. In this article, we will talk about the old Toyota car, that is, the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16V, which is gaining traction in the used car market in 2025.

A Little Bit of the History of the Toyota Car in the Vehicle Market

The Toyota Paseo, also known as Toyota Cynos in Japan, was a coupe launched in January 1991, positioned at the base of the brand’s coupes. It shared the platform and components with the Toyota Tercel and the Starlet. The first generation of the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16v, with the internal code EL40, was in production until August 1995.

It was equipped with a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine 5E-FE, 16 valves, and dual overhead camshafts, delivering a power of 101 hp at 6,400 RPM and 123 Nm of torque at 3,200 RPM.

In 1993, due to regulations imposed in certain states, such as California, the engines of the old Toyota car were altered in those regions to produce only 94 hp, but it had a higher torque of 135 Nm.

Coupled with the engine of the Toyota car, there was a five-speed manual gearbox, with a four-speed automatic gearbox available upon request, which sent power to the front wheels. The weight of this first generation of the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16v ranged from 870 to 950 kilograms, depending on the equipment.

Is It Still Worth Buying the Old Toyota Car?

With an average price of R$ 30 thousand, it is possible to find good units of the Toyota car. In terms of dimensions, the model measures 4145 mm in length, 1,656 mm in width, 1275 mm in height, and 2376 mm in wheelbase.

If you opt for the second generation of the old Toyota car, the design was much more refined, and the equipment levels were the base ST and the better Si, with 14-inch wheels, Sony CD radio, rear spoiler, and ABS. This second generation saw its weight increase, ranging from 910 to 1000 kg, depending on the equipment.

In terms of performance, the first generation of the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16v offers an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 11 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 km/h. The fuel consumption can reach 10 km/l in urban driving and 15 km/l on highways, with declared ranges of 450 km and 675 km, respectively.

Main Defects

Even with great numbers in terms of performance and fuel consumption, the model still has some downsides. According to some owners of the old Toyota car, among the main downsides of the Toyota Paseo 1.5 16v are the clutch and uncomfortable suspension.

Furthermore, some owners mention that the car’s engine becomes a bit weak on certain occasions. It is worth mentioning that this is a car that was not sold much in Brazil. If you do not prepare a preventive maintenance plan and import the parts, you will have to pay high prices buying from Toyota dealerships in Brazil, in addition to having to wait quite a while in some cases.
