Born from a R$ 7.2 billion contract, the Embraer KC-390 overcame challenges to become a global success and the largest military aircraft ever made in Latin America. Discover its history and capabilities

The Embraer KC-390 Millennium is a landmark for the Brazilian aerospace industry and a strategic pillar for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Recognized as the largest military aircraft ever made in Latin America and in the Southern Hemisphere, this program embodies Brazil’s technological capability to compete in a global market dominated by traditional powers.

The journey of the KC-390, from its conception to becoming a sought-after export product by NATO nations, reflects a story of ambition, resilience, and innovation.

The Strategic Partnership Between FAB and Embraer

The origins of the KC-390 date back to the Brazilian Air Force’s need to modernize its airlift capabilities, replacing the aging fleet of C-130 Hercules cargo planes with a national solution. The program was officially launched in 2009, with the FAB commissioning Embraer to develop a next-generation tactical transport aircraft.

The financial milestone was the signing, in May 2014, of a R$ 7.2 billion contract between the FAB and Embraer. This agreement covered the development and acquisition of 28 KC-390 aircraft, as well as a logistics and maintenance package, representing a strategic investment in Brazil’s sovereignty and industrial capacity.

The trajectory of the ambitious initial contract faced the impact of budget constraints in Brazil, exacerbated by the global economic crisis starting in 2019. In light of the new fiscal reality, the FAB initiated a process to adjust the number of orders to its financial capacity, considering not only the acquisition but also the long-term logistics support costs.

After a complex negotiation period involving different proposals, the agreement was revised. In 2024, Embraer confirmed the consolidation of contractual amendments that adjusted the FAB’s final order to 19 KC-390 Millennium aircraft, with a rescheduled delivery timeline.

The Capabilities of the Largest Military Aircraft Ever Made in Latin America

The KC-390 Millennium stands out for its robust specifications. Equipped with two IAE V2500-E5 jet engines, it achieves a cruise speed of Mach 0.8 (about 870 km/h) and a service ceiling of 36,000 feet. Its main advantage is versatility.

With a maximum payload capacity of 26 tons, it can transport armored vehicles like the Guarani, containers, or up to 80 soldiers. The KC-390 was designed to be a multirole platform, capable of being quickly reconfigured for:

In-Flight Refueling (REVO): As KC-390, it can refuel other aircraft.

Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC): It carries up to 74 stretchers.

Search and Rescue (SAR): Equipped with electro-optical/infrared search systems.

Wildfire Fighting: Utilizing the modular MAFFS II system.

Its ability to operate on short and unpaved runways makes it ideal for the various conditions found in Brazilian territory, especially in the Amazon.

A Catalyst for the National Industry: Technology and Partnerships

The KC-390 program has served as a driving force for strengthening Brazil’s Defense Industrial Base. The project generated thousands of qualified jobs and fostered the development of a chain of domestic suppliers.

Brazilian companies such as Eleb, which developed the robust landing gear, and AEL Sistemas, responsible for key avionics components, benefited from technological spillovers. The program also featured strategic international partnerships, with countries like Portugal, Argentina, and the Czech Republic participating in the manufacturing of components, which helped secure the first export orders.

Despite the reduction of domestic orders, the KC-390 has proven to be a success in the international market. Its combination of modernity, jet performance, low life-cycle costs, and multirole versatility has made it a formidable competitor to the established C-130J Super Hercules.

The largest military aircraft ever made in Latin America has already been ordered or selected by several nations, many of them NATO members, such as Portugal, Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, and Sweden. South Korea has also selected the aircraft, and Embraer continues to maintain active sales campaigns in key markets such as India. This global success validates Brazil’s strategic vision and solidifies Embraer’s position as a leader in defense aviation.
