This Brazilian Destination Has 22 Parks, Craft Beer Bar and Almost Zero Violence: Canela Is Where Safe Holidays and Fun Go Hand in Hand
Imagine a place in Brazil where you can stroll peacefully through the streets, enjoy amazing parks with your family, taste local craft beers and feel like you are in another country without leaving the South. Well, know that this place exists and is closer than many people imagine. Canela, in the Serra Gaúcha, has become one of the safest and most surprising destinations for those looking to escape urban chaos and enjoy unforgettable vacations in 2025.
With attractions that mix nature, adventure, culture, gastronomy, and even space experiences, Canela is not just a charming retreat — it is one of the few municipalities in Brazil that can proudly combine high-level tourism with low crime rates. And the fame is spreading: more and more Brazilians and foreigners are putting the city at the top of their lists to relax, adventure or simply enjoy a good cold beer against landscapes that look like they came out of a postcard.
Canela: Where Safety and Leisure Go Hand in Hand
Located a little over 110 km from Porto Alegre, Canela is part of the famous Hortênsias Region in the Serra Gaúcha. But what makes this city even more special — in addition to its natural beauty — is the fact that it is among the safest cities in Brazil. According to the Connected Smart Cities 2024 ranking, prepared by the Urban Systems consultancy, Canela stands out nationally in quality of life, tourism infrastructure, and public safety among small cities.

The municipality has low crime rates, which has attracted entire families and solo travelers — especially women and the elderly — who want to peacefully enjoy everything the destination has to offer. The constant presence of police, cameras, and municipal policies focused on tourist safety have made Canela famous even outside Brazil, appearing in international publications about safe destinations in South America.

National Capital of Theme Parks: Fun for All Ages
Canela is officially recognized as the National Capital of Theme Parks. There are 22 park options that mix nature, science, history, rides, and lots of interactivity. One of the most impressive is the Skyglass Canela, a glass platform that extends 35 meters over the Ferradura Valley — and is more than 360 meters high! The panoramic view of the mountains, the river, and the dense vegetation is breathtaking.
Another must-visit is the Caracol Park, one of the most traditional parks in the Serra Gaúcha. Here, visitors have access to viewpoints and trails with unique landscapes, including the famous Caracol Waterfall, which has a 131-meter drop. You can reach the viewpoint via trails or the modern panoramic elevator.
But the attractions don’t stop there. Canela is also home to the only official NASA exhibition outside the United States: the Space Adventure, where you can see real replicas of rockets, lunar modules, and even meteorite fragments. Additionally, there is:
- A park that pays tribute to German immigration with over 80 detailed sculptures;
- A living cypress maze with over 1,700 trees planted;
- Snow parks, virtual reality, and even life-sized dinosaurs.
Craft Beer, Charming Bars, and Good Food
After so much adventure, nothing is better than relaxing in a cozy bar enjoying a local craft beer. Canela and the nearby Gramado have a vibrant gastronomic scene, with dozens of bars, bistros, and breweries that produce award-winning labels. This is the case of the Cervejaria Farol, which offers guided tours and tastings of pilsen, weiss, and IPA beers.
The cuisine is another spectacle on its own. Fondue, barbecue, pasta, fresh trout, and sweets with German and Italian influence turn any meal into an event. Many restaurants offer views of the valley or blooming gardens, making lunch or dinner a sensory experience.
How to Get to Canela
For those coming from outside the state, the best way to get there is to fly to Porto Alegre and then drive or take a bus to Canela — it’s about a two-hour journey on well-maintained highways like BR-116 and RS-235. The road is, by the way, a spectacle in itself, with mountain stretches full of gentle curves and natural viewpoints.
For those coming from Buenos Aires, the distance is just over 1,400 km, and the trip can be made by car in about 18 hours, crossing Uruguay or the border via Uruguaiana. Many Argentinians take the opportunity to visit other cities in the Serra Gaúcha, such as Nova Petrópolis, Bento Gonçalves, and Gramado.
Winter Tourism and Cultural Events Year-Round
Although Canela is enchanting year-round, it reaches its peak during winter. Temperatures can drop to zero degrees, with frosts and occasionally even snow — which makes the city even more magical. It is also the time when music and gastronomy festivals occur, along with the famous Christmas Dream, which transforms the streets of the city into a spectacle of lights and free performances.
A Destination to Recharge the Soul
Canela has everything that is expected of a complete destination: lush nature, unique attractions, safety, good food, and a welcoming people. Whether for a romantic weekend, a family trip, or a complete vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolises, the city offers the perfect balance between rest and entertainment.
And the best part: all of this without giving up safety, something increasingly rare in tourist destinations in Brazil.
