Mercedes-Benz Guarantees That the Truck, Scheduled for Release in 2024, Has Engines That Can Reach a Power of 816 HP
The Mercedes-Benz has transformed its largest truck into an electric one. The truck, named the Mercedes eActros LongHaul, has a massive battery pack with 600 kWh, installed between the chassis rails to be used for medium-distance trips. Mercedes-Benz guarantees that the truck will be able to carry up to 42 tons for around 500 km.

For example, the eActros LongHaul truck could cross the Presidente Dutra Highway from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro without recharging. Already in the reality of Europe, the truck would have enough range to cross a country from end to end. The eActros LongHaul will start being sold in 2024 in Europe.
The electric eActros LongHaul truck from Mercedes-Benz is the main attraction of Daimler Trucks at the IAA Transportation 2022. This is the largest fair for heavy and cargo vehicles in the world, which will take place this week in Hannover. After a four-year hiatus, the 2022 edition will focus on electric or clean energy vehicles, such as hydrogen.

Mercedes-Benz aims to offer the eActros LongHaul as a tractor unit or with a rigid chassis, also including the provision of a power take-off to enable various applications.
The electric truck from Mercedes-Benz has a cabin as large as those of the biggest Actros produced in Brazil. The power of the eActros LongHaul is also equivalent most of the time, as the so-called e-axle is an axle that allocates two motors that most of the time deliver 544 HP, but can reach peaks of 816 HP.
The truck from Mercedes-Benz features a front free of grilles, but with several LEDs, helping to create a futuristic aura that will become reality in the near future, but at a cost. It is speculated that the price of the eActros LongHaul could surpass that of four equivalent diesel trucks, among other dilemmas to be faced.
Problems to Be Solved by Mercedes-Benz
The first dilemma is that, since in an electric truck the main load will be represented by the batteries, the truck’s payload capacity is reduced, as the batteries weigh. The weight of an extra battery pack may not offset the gain in range of the truck.
Furthermore, another dilemma is the issue of recharging. Mercedes-Benz envisions the use of mega chargers to raise the batteries’ charge of the eActros from 20 to 80% in half an hour. However, the capacity of these chargers is not defined, being only stated that it uses state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
The provision of powerful and spacious charging stations capable of accommodating large electric trucks will also not be easy. Mercedes-Benz plans to offer consultancy to the companies purchasing the LongHaul to ensure they have the appropriate infrastructure. However, Mercedes-Benz is also part of a consortium with Volvo and Traton (VW and Scania) to create charging points in strategic locations throughout Europe.
Another alternative to the problem is the eTrailers, road implements with their own electric motor and battery pack. Mercedes-Benz illustrates this idea with the proposal from Trailer Dynamics, made in partnership with local manufacturer Krone. It would be possible to increase the range of the eActros LongHaul beyond 800 km depending on the capacity of the chosen batteries. This way, it would already be possible to leave São Paulo heading to Belo Horizonte without needing to recharge.
Perhaps the eTrailer is more interesting for the Mercedes eActros 300 Tractor, another launch from the brand at the IAA. This truck is another electric Actros but with a more modest range of 220 km, due to the smaller battery, with 112 kWh. Its e-Axle with two motors delivers 440 HP under normal conditions and 544 HP at peak. The commercial release will occur in the second half of 2023.
