With a span of 1.98 meters and 180 kg, the Bumble Bee II is the smallest manned airplane in the world — and it even managed to fly with a pilot on board.

Imagine an airplane so small that its wingspan is less than the width of a compact car. An airplane that fits inside a regular garage, weighs less than a motorcycle, yet is capable of taking off with a human on board. Does it sound like a joke? Well, this airplane not only exists, but it also flew successfully in 1988 and entered the Guinness Book as the smallest manned airplane in the world. Its name is Bumble Bee II, a true gem of handcrafted engineering and extreme aviation — so small that it challenges our notion of what an airplane truly is.

When Engineering Meets Obsession

The mastermind behind this surreal creation was Robert H. Starr, an American pilot and aerospace engineer, passionate about absurd challenges. After years of testing experimental aircraft, Starr decided to build the most compact manned airplane ever made, a kind of “proof of concept” — and at the same time, a provocation to what was believed to be possible.

The Bumble Bee II was the evolution of the Bumble Bee I, an already extremely small aircraft that he considered “too big.” The second model would be even smaller, lighter, and with its fuselage reduced to the minimum to keep the pilot alive and the structure flying.

And it worked. The aircraft officially flew on May 8, 1988, in the skies of Arizona (USA), with Robert Starr himself at the controls. The flight was short, but it was enough to secure the world record.

The Size Impresses — For Its Smallness

The dimensions of the Bumble Bee II are almost comical:

  • Wingspan: only 1.98 meters — shorter than many outstretched arms.
  • Length: about 2.7 meters — similar to an average motorcycle.
  • Height: just over 1 meter — would fit under a garage awning.
  • Empty Weight: about 180 kg — lighter than many high-displacement motorcycles.

Even with this tiny size, the airplane was functional: it had retractable landing gear, an elevator control, and ailerons, an 85 hp engine, and a cockpit that accommodated the body of an adult pilot, albeit snugly.

How Is It Possible for Such a Small Airplane to Fly?

The secret of the Bumble Bee II lay in its millimeter-perfect combination of aerodynamics, lightness, and power. The airplane used a modified Continental C85 engine, which provided enough power to lift it off the ground despite its tiny wingspan.

The flight, however, was an extreme exercise in control and courage. With such small wings, the aircraft had low lift and poor stability. It was sensitive to any gust of wind, and the pilot needed quick reflexes and nerves of steel to keep it in the air.

Moreover, visibility was limited, the internal space was claustrophobic, and comfort was simply non-existent. But the goal was not to fly far — it was to prove that it was possible to fly with something so small.

A Feat Recognized Worldwide

After the historic flight in 1988, the Bumble Bee II was immediately recognized by the Guinness World Records as the smallest manned airplane in the world — and the title remains to this day.

The aircraft became a cult icon in the world of experimental aviation, being displayed in museums and constantly cited in lists of “the most absurd planes ever built.” It is studied by engineers, modelers, and enthusiasts as a reference for functional miniaturization.

Unfortunately, after the successful flight, the aircraft suffered damage in subsequent tests and never flew again. However, it was restored and is now displayed as a historical piece.

Much More Than a Curiosity: The Impact of the Bumble Bee II

You might think that the Bumble Bee II was just an eccentricity. But it represented an important turning point in experimental engineering. It showed that:

  • It is possible to build functional aircraft at extremely reduced scales;
  • Extreme miniaturization also challenges the limits of materials and aerodynamics;
  • Courage and individual knowledge can still create advances — even without corporations behind them.

This artisan and bold spirit is the same one that drove the Wright brothers, the pioneers of aviation, and continues to be present in independent builders to this day.

Furthermore, the Bumble Bee II served as a warning about the real limits of manned aviation. With wingspans this small, control becomes unstable, comfort disappears, and risk increases exponentially.

In other words, the Bumble Bee II is on the exact edge between manned flight and technical absurdity — and that is precisely why it is so fascinating.

In the age of autonomous drones, hypersonic fighters, and state-of-the-art commercial jets, it is almost poetic to remember that the smallest airplane in the world was built in a man’s garage with simple tools and a lot of courage.

The Bumble Bee II remains unmatched in its proposal — an airplane so small that it seems to have come out of a cartoon, but that fulfilled its purpose: to lift a man off the ground with the minimum structure possible.

And although it didn’t go far, it flew — enough to mark its name in the history of aviation as the smallest manned airplane ever made by a human being.
