With Petrobras’ New Pipeline, Corn Becomes Strategic Raw Material for Ethanol and SAF, Connecting the Midwest to São Paulo in an Unprecedented Logistics Route

Petrobras announced the construction of a new Petrobras pipeline with a length of 2,030 km and an investment of over R$ 2 billion, dedicated to transporting biofuels from the Midwest to São Paulo. The project, expected to be operational between 2025 and 2030, is part of the state-owned company’s logistics plan, which allocates US$ 3.6 billion by 2029 to expand the pipeline network.

According to information from Monitor Mercantil, the venture reinforces the company’s bet on integrating agribusiness with the energy sector, transforming corn into a central input for the production of ethanol and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This measure directly connects the agricultural expansion of Mato Grosso to the global energy transition.

Who Will Benefit from Petrobras’ New Pipeline?

The pipeline will connect the interior of Mato Grosso to São Paulo, facilitating the production flow from the new corn ethanol plants, which are multiplying in the region.

This reduces logistical costs, enhances the competitiveness of the sugar and energy sector, and strengthens Brazil’s position as a supplier of biofuels.

According to Daniel Sales Correa, Petrobras’ manager, corn is now being treated as a strategic input for the energy future, especially in the SAF production route, a fuel that is being demanded by global airlines in response to environmental goals.

How Much Will Be Invested and What Are the Challenges?

The new Petrobras pipeline will require over R$ 2 billion in direct investments and integrates the largest package of infrastructure works in the energy sector since the last decade.

The goal is to meet the growing demand for biofuels and reduce logistical bottlenecks, ensuring greater safety in the transportation of flammable liquids.

However, experts remind that the project faces challenges regarding environmental licensing and regulatory integration, as it will be necessary to reconcile state and federal legislation.

Where Does Natural Gas Come In?

The logistical debate also involves the supply of natural gas to the Midwest, which is currently insufficient to meet the needs of cities like Brasília.

The decline in supply from Bolivia is putting pressure on the system, requiring new routes via the Southeast and investments in diversifying the energy matrix.

According to Helder Ferraz, director of NTS, regulatory modernization will be crucial.

Meanwhile, Jorge Hijjar from TBG revealed that 30 gas transportation contracts have already been signed, indicating growing demand even amidst uncertainties.

New Energy Sources on Petrobras’ Radar

The new Petrobras pipeline also connects to the debate about hydrogen and biogas, which are gaining traction as alternatives.

Studies by the Federal University of Ceará show that up to 3% hydrogen can be injected into steel pipelines, paving the way for future adaptations.

However, legal experts warn: the ANP has yet to establish clear rules for interchangeability between natural gas, hydrogen, and biogas.

Without this, the market may face legal uncertainty and delays in investments.

Is It Worth It for Brazil?

For Monitor Mercantil, the new pipeline represents a strategic turning point: it connects the strength of agribusiness to the energy transition, positions Brazil in the global race for SAF, and enhances logistical competitiveness in a transforming global market.

The expectation is that the project will not only reduce internal costs, but also create opportunities for the country to lead the export of advanced biofuels, including corn ethanol and second-generation derivatives.

And you, do you believe that Petrobras’ new pipeline will be a game-changer for the energy transition in Brazil? Or could regulatory and environmental risks still delay the expected impact? Share your thoughts in the comments — we want to hear from those experiencing this firsthand.
