Learn About the Submarine Development Program (Prosub)
The Submarine Development Program (Prosub) was created in 2008 between Brazil and France, anticipating the transfer of French technology for the development of four conventional submarines powered by diesel-electric engines, and one submarine that would use nuclear energy, along with a shipyard and a naval base.
The aim of Prosub is to protect the Blue Amazon, an area that extends approximately 8,500 km, along which the Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters (AJB) run, totaling an approximate area of 4.5 million km², which contains biological and mineral wealth threatened by predatory exploitation.
This region is also home to hundreds of platforms for underwater exploration. More than 90% of Brazil’s oil, around two million barrels daily, is extracted from the sea. Additionally, about 95% of the national foreign trade occurs via the seas.
