Natural Gas Is Essential For Development In Minas. Construction Of The Pipeline In The Midwest Region Will Generate 15 Thousand Jobs. Gasmig Plans To Invest R$5.8 Billion By 2034.
Natural gas is an important driver for economic growth in Minas Gerais and throughout Brazil. The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) released a survey indicating that only 14% of industrial sector companies in the country use this resource in their production processes. Among the main reasons for the low utilization of natural gas are inadequate business processes and the difficulty of access to supply of the input.
On the other hand, the construction of pipelines in the Midwest region promises to revolutionize the economic landscape, generating tangible opportunities. This new venture in the natural gas sector is seen as a way to create 15 thousand new jobs in the region. Additionally, the project is expected to provide a more economical and efficient alternative for fuel, contributing to the sustainable development of the country. Gasmig has already announced plans to invest R$5.8 billion by 2034, further boosting this important energy resource.
Growth Prospects Of Natural Gas In The Industry
According to the survey conducted by CNI, 9% of industries have plans to increase the use of natural gas in their production processes. Despite its limited use in the industrial sector currently, the appropriate word to define the growing importance of natural gas is ‘development’. In the Midwest region of Minas Gerais, for example, the construction of the pipeline has the potential to create approximately 15 thousand jobs, both direct and indirect, in the eight cities crossed by the project.

Economic Potential Of Natural Gas In Minas Gerais
The arrival of natural gas in these locations represents enormous potential for wealth generation in the Minas economy. Companies belonging to the metallurgy and steel industry sectors will be the main users of this fuel. Using its own resources, by the year 2034, Gasmig plans to allocate approximately R$ 5.8 billion to expand its natural gas distribution system, including the construction of new pipelines across the state.
Projects And Financial Milestones Of Gasmig
In addition to the Midwest Project that connects Betim to Divinópolis, other studies are underway. According to the Annual Administration Report, in 2023, Gasmig achieved significant financial milestones: a gross revenue of R$ 4.155 billion, net equity of R$ 1.305 billion, and a net profit of R$ 596.1 million. The Minas company intends to continue its expansion.
Expansion Of The Distribution Network And New Investments
The construction of over 300 km of distribution networks to supply the Midwest region is the first step in expanding the supply of natural gas to more locations in Minas Gerais. This initial investment in the new pipeline could result in future investments to supply the Triângulo Mineiro with piped gas, further expanding the distribution network in strategic areas.
Partnerships And Infrastructure For The Brazilian Midwest
On another front, Gasmig is collaborating with gas utilities in the Brazilian Midwest to enable the construction of a transport pipeline that, starting from São Paulo, crosses the Triângulo Mineiro and heads towards Goiás. Additionally, there is an intention to support the feasibility of a potential natural gas thermoelectric plant in the mining region of Sudene, resulting from the privatization process of Eletrobras.
Federal Investments And The Energy Transition
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, announced at the end of June an energy transition program in Minas Gerais, with total investments of R$ 58 billion. Of this amount, R$ 4 billion will be allocated to the biofuels sector, consolidating the energy transition in the region.
Technology And The Energy Demand Of Data Centers
Although it may not seem obvious, natural gas and Artificial Intelligence are more connected than one might think. The growing energy demand from data centers makes natural gas a relevant energy resource to meet this need. According to Reuters, meeting the increased demand would require an additional supply of up to 8.5 million cubic meters of natural gas daily. By 2030, the energy demand from these processing centers is expected to nearly triple, reaching 42 gigawatts.
The Role Of Gasmig In Energy Supply
In Brazil, the energy demand of large data centers is already comparable to the total consumption of the state of Tocantins. Currently, Gasmig serves 47 municipalities in seven mesoregions of the state of Minas Gerais (Metropolitan BH, South and Southwest of Minas, Zona da Mata, Campo das Vertentes, Vale do Rio Doce, West of Minas, and Vale do Mucuri). The clients are diverse, including industries, commercial and service establishments, gas vehicle fueling stations (GNV), and companies distributing Industrial Compressed Natural Gas (GNCI) and Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles (GNCV).
Segments Served By Gasmig
In addition to the mentioned segments, Gasmig also provides natural gas to cogeneration, generation, and air conditioning companies, residential units, and thermoelectric plants. This comprehensive service reinforces the importance of natural gas as a fundamental input in different sectors of the Minas economy.
