Gas Turbine for Power Generation from Siemens Energy Delivered to the GNA II Thermoelectric Plant at the Port of Açu and Marks Construction at the Terminal
Siemens Energy has reached an important milestone in the construction of the GNA II thermoelectric plant, located at the Port of Açu in São João da Barra (RJ), by delivering the first of three gas turbines that will comprise the power island of the plant. This will have an installed capacity of 1.7 GW and is expected to start commercial operation in early 2025.
The turbine, which left Siemens Energy’s factory in Berlin, Germany, in February, arrived at the Port of Açu, at the Multicargo Terminal – T-MULT, about three miles from the plant’s construction site. The second unit is expected to arrive in May. Each turbine has a nominal capacity of over 350 MW, weighs around 310 tons, is 11.9 meters long, and 5.3 meters high, according to the Petronotícias website.
Importance of the First Siemens Turbine for the GNA II Project at the Port of Açu
The arrival of the first Siemens Energy turbine for the GNA II plant at the Port of Açu represents a milestone important for the project. With over 2,700 jobs created, the project promotes economic and social development for Northern Fluminense, the State of Rio de Janeiro, and Brazil. Furthermore, when the plant is operational, it will contribute to greater security and reliability to the National Electric System, as highlighted by Carlos Baldi, the Director of Operations and Implementation at Gás Natural Açu (GNA).

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
Details about the Power Island of the GNA II Plant at the Port of Açu
The power island of the GNA II plant at the Port of Açu will consist of three gas turbines from Siemens, one steam turbine, four generators, and three heat recovery steam boilers, among other systems, according to GNA information. The other equipment for Siemens’ power island is expected to arrive by June. Currently, construction of the GNA II plant is 65% complete, with work focused on the electromechanical assembly phase and preparation of the areas to receive the equipment. The commissioning period is expected to begin in early 2024.
Construction Going Full Steam Ahead at the Port of Açu!
The GNA II thermal power plant at the Port of Açu is making progress with the delivery of the first gas turbine by Siemens Energy, one of the most important components of the plant. The plant, which will have an installed capacity of 1.7 GW, represents an important milestone for the GNA project, promoting the economic and social development of the region, generating jobs and ensuring the security and reliability of the National Electric System. The terminal is expected to start operations in early 2025.
