The Amazon River Mouth Region on the Equatorial Margin Is Petrobras’ New Bet to Expand the Frontier of Fuel Exploration. Civil Society Organizations Mobilize and Pressure Ibama for a Position Regarding the Oil Company’s Licensing.

Last Tuesday, (04/25), the president of Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment), Rodrigo Agostinho, received a letter from civil society organizations in the Amazon region regarding Petrobras’ environmental licensing for the Equatorial Margin project. The campaign to expand the exploration frontier to the Amazon River Mouth region is subject to constant criticism and clashes in the Current Government.

Ibama President Pressured to Take a Position on Petrobras’ Environmental Licensing for Its Fuel Exploration Project at the Amazon River Mouth

Civil society organizations from the Amazon region pressured Ibama president, Rodrigo Agostinho, during an event of the Amazon Parliament in Belém on Tuesday about the future of Petrobras’ presence on the Equatorial Margin.

The entities are requesting a decision on deep-water oil exploration in the Amazon River Mouth, and that it first undergo an environmental assessment of the sedimentary areas and include public participation in the discussions.

Petrobras is seeking licensing to begin drilling activities and expand the fuel exploration frontier in the northern part of the country.

Organizations opposed to exploratory activities delivered a letter to Agostinho signed by the Marajó Observatory, Marajó Vivo, Mapinguari Institute, and Purpose Brasil, which was also given to foreign representatives present.

The Minister of the Environment Marina Silva has sent other statements to the president of Ibama on the subject, some asking for the implementation of a Strategic Environmental Assessment, a possibility admitted by Rodrigo Agostinho.

The pressure from civil society organizations in the Amazon region regarding deep-water oil exploration in the Amazon River Mouth has been increasing recently.

The Amazon River Mouth region is an environmentally sensitive area, and oil exploration could have significant impacts on biodiversity and the lives of local communities.

Thus, environmental organizations from across the country are turning to discussions about Petrobras’ future in exploring the Equatorial Margin.

Ibama’s Situation and the State’s Environmental Licensing for the Exploration of the Amazon River Mouth Generates Debates in the Current Government

In the Chamber, the issue of Petrobras and the exploration of the Amazon River Mouth is still generating countless debates.

Deputy Ivan Valente, from Psol/SP, presented a request for a public hearing in the Chamber of Deputies’ Environment Commission to discuss oil exploration at the Amazon River Mouth.

However, the request was withdrawn from the agenda during the session on 04/26 due to the possibility of rejection based on the proposed list of guests.

Among the guests were Marina Silva and Rodrigo Agostinho, as well as Minister Alexandre Silveira (Ministry of Mining and Energy), Petrobras President Jean Paul Prates, ANP General Director Rodolfo Saboia, and experts Suely Araújo (Climate Observatory) and Luís Sánchez (USP).

The deputy decided to change the list of guests and submit the request for a vote in the committee again, due to the risk of the committee becoming a stage for public confrontation between government sectors with opposing positions on the issue.

Now, civil society organizations from the Amazon region are awaiting a position from the president of Ibama regarding Petrobras’ project on the Equatorial Margin.
