Understanding The Importance Of Electric Vehicle Maintenance

Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for being easier to maintain than their fuel-powered counterparts. However, this does not mean you can neglect proper care. In this comprehensive maintenance guide, we will explore how to keep your electric vehicle in excellent condition to ensure you get the most out of its lifespan and save on total ownership costs.

Essential Tips For Caring For Your Electric Vehicle

  1. Paying Attention To Tires: Since EVs are heavier, their tires may wear out more quickly. Check tire wear and pressure monthly, rotate every 5,000 miles, and consider tires specific to EVs.
  2. Take Care Of The Battery: To extend battery life, avoid charging for too long, limit the use of fast charging, and avoid completely discharging it frequently. Use a timer to control charging at home.
  3. Adapt To Weather Conditions: Protect the battery from extreme heat and cold, and adjust charging as needed. In winter, charge a bit more to compensate for using the heating system, and in summer, keep the car in the shade or a garage.
  4. Brake Maintenance: Although EVs have regenerative braking, brake fluid should be replaced every three years to avoid system failures.
  5. Chassis Cleaning: Clean the EV chassis at least twice a year to prevent dirt and debris from affecting performance and range.

Electric Vehicle Maintenance Checklist

In addition to the tips above, follow this checklist to keep your electric vehicle in great shape:

Monthly:

  • Inspect interior and exterior lights;
  • Check tires and pressure;
  • Check the windshield washer fluid level;
  • Check the coolant level.

Every 6 Months:

  • Check the 12-volt battery connections and clean if necessary;
  • Inspect drainage holes;
  • Check the levels of the coolant fluid;
  • Inspect safety lights.

Annually:

  • Rotate tires;
  • Replace the climate control system filter;
  • Conduct a multipoint inspection.

Every 15,000 Miles:

  • Replace windshield wiper blades;
  • Change the air conditioning filter.

Every 3 Years:

  • Change the brake fluid.
