With one of its main goals for the future, the Government of Argentina aims to become a regional and global energy exporter. The exploration of hydrocarbons in the Palermo Aike field and Vaca Muerta can significantly contribute to achieving this goal.
Argentina is committed to strengthening its position as a regional and global energy exporter, and one of the important steps in this direction is the exploration of the Palermo Aike field. Located in the south of the country, covering an area of 12,600 square kilometers, Palermo Aike is the second most significant unconventional hydrocarbon formation in the country, following only Vaca Muerta. This project has the potential to generate over 10 billion barrels of oil, representing Argentina’s oil production for the next 50 years.
Exploration of Palermo Aike: A Significant Milestone for Argentina
Argentina is directing its efforts toward Palermo Aike, a geological formation located in the south of the province of Santa Cruz, which offers new prospects for oil reserves.
With an area of 12,600 square kilometers, this field is the second most important to be explored, just after Vaca Muerta.

The significance of this field lies in the fact that it may contain resources equivalent to 10 billion barrels of oil, according to a joint statement from the Argentine state-owned company YPF and Compañía General de Combustibles (CGC).
Both companies specialize in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons and have signed an agreement for the drilling of the first exploratory well in Palermo Aike.
The exploration of this field, which will be conducted by YPF, is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2023.
If the results are promising, the companies will invest in new wells and infrastructure in the area.
Promising Potential and Optimism in the Palermo Aike Project
The exploration project of Palermo Aike is enveloped in optimism. Hugo Eurnakian, president of CGC, assured that the estimated resources in the field “are equivalent to Argentina’s current production for 50 years.”
In March, Sergio Massa, the Minister of Economy, revealed that Palermo Aike has one-third of the potential of Vaca Muerta in terms of oil and gas reserves.
Furthermore, he highlighted that this venture “offers the possibility for Argentina to multiply its energy export dream.”
It is believed that Palermo Aike contains gas reserves of 130 trillion cubic feet (TCF) and 6.6 billion barrels of crude oil, while Vaca Muerta holds 308 TCF of gas and 16 billion barrels of oil.
According to Télam, Argentina’s primary public news agency, the productive zones of the field are expected to be located at depths starting from 2,100 meters, extending up to 4,300 meters.
