The Global Agro Industry Is Entering a Revolution and Now, Bovine Gallstones Are Worth Twice the Price of Gold. Just One Ounce of the Material Can Reach US$ 5,8 Thousand.

Bovine Gallstones Are Worth Twice the Price of Gold? While people do everything to avoid gallstones, in the agricultural world, the scenario is completely different. When found in bulls and cows, these hardened formations, known as bovine gallstones, have become a true treasure for breeders. With values that can exceed double the price of gold, these stones, widely used in traditional Asian medicine, are gaining prominence in the global market, especially in Brazil. But why is this material so valuable? In this article, we explore the reasons behind the high demand, the commercialization process, and how this is transforming the agricultural sector.

Bovine Gallstones Cost Up to US$ 5,8 Thousand Per Ounce

Bovine gallstones are worth twice the price of gold, being one of the most valued ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the American newspaper – The Wall Street Journal, they have become so valuable in the global agro industry that traders are willing to pay up to US$ 5,8 thousand per ounce (28.34 grams), double the price of gold, for each of these pieces of hardened bile.

Herbalists in China use gallstones to treat strokes. The country is currently dealing with an increase in cases of hypertension, obesity, and other conditions common in the West. These health problems are also intertwined with the second largest economy in the world after half a century of economic changes and consequently, in the population’s diet.

The bilirubin, the dark orange compound produced during the natural breakdown of red blood cells, is usually excreted by the body. However, when it accumulates in the form of gallstones, or stones in the gallbladder, it can be harmful and even fatal to cattle, humans, or any vertebrate.

However, bovine gallstones are worth twice the price of gold, and the growing demand has sparked a treasure hunt in the global agro industry in major beef-producing regions around the world, from places like Texas and Australia to Brazil, the largest beef exporter in the world.

How Are Bovine Gallstones Used in the Global Agro Industry?

Practiced for thousands of years, traditional medicine is still widely used in China, often in conjunction with Western medicine, and preparing hardened bile for consumption is an art. Bovine gallstones are worth twice the price of gold, and once collected, they are carefully cleaned and left to dry for weeks before being ground.

In China, the powder is usually mixed with other ingredients, from powdered buffalo horn to realgar, a red stone that contains arsenic. The combination is molded into so-called Angong pills. Many of the other supposed benefits of bovine gallstones, such as reducing fever and treating infections, have little scientific basis.

However, recent experimental studies have found that the pills could help buy time in the treatment of strokes, according to doctor Donghai Wen, born in China, currently at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

Other Benefits of Bovine Gallstone Pills

A recent study with rats at the University of Hong Kong found evidence that Angong pills can delay the effects of an ischemic stroke, the most common type of stroke where a clot blocks blood flow to the brain.

Researchers discovered that several ingredients in the pill protected the membrane surrounding the brain, which can give stroke victims an extra 30 minutes to reach the hospital before suffering irreversible and, in some cases, fatal brain damage.

This has made bovine gallstone powder an increasingly sought-after item in China, where the WHO says that strokes have become the leading cause of death.
