Lost City of Atlantis May Have Been Found, Researchers Claim

The legendary lost City of Atlantis, which has fascinated scholars and adventurers for centuries, may finally have been found. Researchers from the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC) discovered several submerged islands in the region of present-day Spain, believing these may be the origins of the myth of Atlantis. The discovery rekindles the debate about the existence of this civilization described by Plato.

The mystery of the lost City of Atlantis has always intrigued historians and scientists, and now, new evidence may shed light on this enigmatic civilization. During an underwater exploration off the east coast of Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands, researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to map the seafloor and discovered several submerged islands that are believed to have sunk millions of years ago.

Research Team Believes These Islands Were Habitable

These islands are located on an underwater mountain that houses three inactive volcanoes, with an impressive diameter of about 50 kilometers. The base of these islands is approximately 2.3 kilometers below the ocean surface, and the exploration took place at depths ranging from 100 to 2,500 meters. The research team believes that these islands were habitable between 56 and 34 million years ago, until the volcanoes ceased their activity and the islands began to slowly sink.

Sand Deposited While the Islands Were Still Sinking

Most fascinatingly, despite the passage of time and adverse conditions, some features of these islands remain intact. Researchers reported the presence of beaches, cliffs, and even sand dunes. This sand, scientists say, was deposited while the islands were still sinking, creating a submerged landscape that appears frozen in time. One of these beaches, for example, is located just 60 meters below the ocean surface, demonstrating the gradual process of submersion.

To deepen the study, the team is now analyzing samples of volcanic rocks collected during the exploration. They hope to date these rocks accurately to determine exactly when the islands began to sink and how this process relates to the legends about the lost city of Atlantis.

Myth of Atlantis

The myth of Atlantis, originally described by Plato in the 4th century BC, speaks of an advanced and powerful civilization located on a large island near the Iberian Peninsula, which was swallowed by the sea as divine punishment for its immorality. Researchers have nicknamed the newly discovered underwater mountain Monte Los Atlantes, a direct reference to the legendary city.

While it is still early to confirm any direct link between these submerged islands and the lost city of Atlantis, the discovery certainly reopens the discussion and offers a new perspective on the ancient myth. If the analyses confirm that these islands were inhabited in ancient times and resemble the descriptions of Atlantis, we may be facing one of the greatest archaeological finds in history.

Meanwhile, the scientific community eagerly awaits more details that may finally solve the mystery that has long captivated human imagination. The lost city of Atlantis, it seems, is closer to being unveiled.

Porque essa notícia só saiu nesse site? Qual a fonte? Pois uma notícia dessa Magnitude ( possível descoberta de
Atlantida) deveria ser anunciada por mais veículos não?
