Fifteen-Year Historical Contract Secures Petrobras’ Supply of 0.8 Million Tons of LNG Annually Starting in 2027, Directly from the U.S. The Agreement with Centrica, Valued in Billions, Aims to Shield the State-Owned Company from Global Market Volatility, Strengthen National Energy Security, and Boost Brazil’s Competitiveness in the International Scenario.

Petrobras has just taken a strategic step that promises to transform the future of energy in Brazil. The Brazilian state-owned company signed a long-term purchase and sale agreement for liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the British giant Centrica. Valid until 2040, this contract positions Brazil at a new level of energy security and competitiveness in the global market.

The Billion-Dollar Agreement: What to Expect by 2040?

The agreement provides for the purchase of 0.8 million tons per year (mtpa) of LNG for a period of 15 years, starting in 2027. This represents a robust long-term commitment, consolidating Petrobras as one of the leading global LNG buyers. The supply will include volumes from Centrica’s portfolio in the United States, one of the world’s largest producers of natural gas.

The gas will come from two strategic projects: Sabine Pass and Delfin. Sabine Pass is operated by Cheniere, one of the giants in the LNG sector, while the Delfin project is being developed by Delfin Midstream. The latter is still awaiting the final investment decision (FID) to start its operation, but it is seen as a promising bet to ensure stable supply in the coming years.

Why Did Petrobras Invest in This Long-Term Agreement?

The agreement ensures that Petrobras will receive 0.8 million tons of LNG per year starting in 2027, under a 15-year contract. The supply will come from the United States, through the Sabine Pass and Delfin projects, strengthening Brazil's energy security.

The Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Petrobras, Maurício Tolmasquim, stated that the contract with Centrica aligns with the strategy to reduce exposure to spot market volatility. In other words, by entering into a long-term agreement, Petrobras protects itself from price fluctuations that could negatively affect its operational costs.

This agreement not only guarantees stability but also strengthens Petrobras’ competitive position in the global market. With a stable and predictable supply of LNG, the Brazilian state-owned company positions itself as a more reliable and economical option for its customers, attracting new investments and consolidating its leadership in the energy sector.

The Global Impact: Centrica’s Vision for the Future of LNG

According to Offshore Energy, for Centrica, this agreement is more than a gas sale; it’s a strategy to diversify its markets and ensure a steady revenue stream. According to the group’s CEO, Chris O’Shea, this partnership symbolizes the company’s ability to adapt to the global market, providing robust solutions for energy security.

The CEO also highlighted that LNG is a key piece in the puzzle of the global energy transition. Centrica’s commitment is to invest in solutions that promote efficiency and decarbonization while maintaining LNG as a solid foundation during this transition to cleaner energy sources.

Beyond LNG: New Developments by Petrobras in the Pre-Salt

As it advances in LNG, Petrobras is also expanding its oil operations. Recently, the company found new indications of oil in a well in the Búzios field, located in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin. This discovery reinforces Petrobras’ strategic position as one of the leading global producers.

Another significant milestone was the startup of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, a floating production, storage, and offloading unit for oil. Located in the same field, this project enhances Petrobras’ ability to expand its production and meet the growing demand for energy.
