The Use of Reusable Water in the Emergency Response Network is the Result of a Partnership Between Reduc and Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes)
Petrobras announced yesterday (08/20) that its Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) has started using reusable water to maintain pressure in the emergency response system of the unit. Recruitment and Selection to Work During Maintenance Shutdown at Petrobras Refinery – REFAP, on This Day
The Emergency Water Combat Network (Race) was connected to the Water Treatment Unit of the refinery last month, registering a 4% to 5% reduction in the refinery’s raw water consumption
To be used in firefighting systems, for example, the water must not contain oil residue or other substances incompatible with foam production.

According to the state-owned company’s report, “The initiative is aligned with the goal of reducing the capture of fresh water in Petrobras operations by 30% by 2025, one of the 10 Sustainability Commitments made in the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan and, in addition, it is expected to generate estimated savings of R$ 1.5 million/year.”
“The use of reusable water in the emergency response network is the result of a partnership between Reduc and the Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes) and paves the way for other operational units of the company to implement this reuse modality for their treated effluent,” explains the Water and Effluent Manager of Reduc, Alexandre Rodrigues Cezar.
The total volume of reuse in Petrobras last year was 82.2 million m³, which corresponds to 34.4% of the total demand for freshwater. To put it into perspective, this reused volume would be enough to supply, for example, the city of Porto Alegre for one year.
