Petrobras has confirmed that, starting on the 1st, it will make an adjustment to the number of employees working on the platforms in the Santos Basin

Petrobras informed that, starting in June, 937 employees will be transferred to Rio de Janeiro under special regime, who work on seven oil and natural gas exploration and production platforms in the Santos Basin, in São Paulo. According to Petrobras, the decision to move employees to Rio de Janeiro will be to reduce the company's costs, the measure will impact about 20 percent of these employees who live in Baixada Santista. Since April 2018, flights have stopped departing from Itanhaém Airport and have been transferred to Jacarepaguá (RJ).

Currently, Petrobras offers oil tankers the transfer from Santos to the fluminense airfield and vice versa, but this will end and the group will be forced to pay for these trips out of its own pocket.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Petrobras will continue to provide transportation, as well as pre-shipment accommodation for workers in an offshore regime.

According to Fábio Mello, coordinator of the Press Department of the Union of Petroleum Workers on the Coast of São Paulo (Sindipetro-LP), the effects of this measure taken by Petrobras go further, because it no longer makes sense to keep it in the administrative building of Valongo, in Santos, all support activities for these operators.

“We could be talking about the closure of another 600 to a thousand jobs. Not to mention the collapse it will cause in the region because of the restaurants and other businesses created around Edisa (Petrobras administrative building, in Valongo), where around 2.500 people work today,” said Mello

The union leader also said that, in 2019, there was a transfer from Santos to Rio de Janeiro of some professionals linked to the exploration and production area, such as geologists and engineers. In the beginning, the company intended to build three towers in Valongo, but only one got off the ground.

Note from Petrobras

The Petrobras Institutional Communication Press Management confirmed, in a note, that as of the next 1st, it will make an administrative adjustment in the allocation of employees who work on the platforms of the Santos Basin Business Unit.

“Of this group, around 80% do not live in Baixada Santista. With the adjustment, Petrobras will no longer bear travel costs (to Jacarepaguá)”.

The company did not comment on the transfer of other employees who work in the Santos administrative building and a possible emptying of activities in Baixada Santista.
