In The Midst Of The Largest Military Modernization Effort Since The Cold War, Poland Has Just Signed A New Billion-Dollar Agreement With South Korea. The European Country Bets On Local Manufacturing And Foreign Technology To Strengthen Its Land Defense In The Coming Years.

Poland Took Another Step In Its Military Modernization By Signing A Contract Worth US$ 6.5 Billion With South Korean Hyundai Rotem.

The Agreement Provides For The Purchase Of 180 K2 Black Panther Tanks And 81 Support Vehicles.

The Ceremony Took Place In Gliwice, With The Presence Of Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz And South Korean Minister Of Defense Ahn Gyu-back. The Supply Of The Vehicles Is Expected To Occur Between 2026 And 2030.

Production In Polish Territory

Of The Total Tanks, 116 Will Be The K2GF Version, Produced In South Korea. The Other 64 Are Part Of The K2PL Variant, With Part Of The Manufacturing Transferred To Poland.

The Production Of The First Three K2PL Tanks Will Occur In Asia. After That, Bumar-Łabędy, A Subsidiary Of The State-Owned PGZ, Will Take Over Local Manufacturing.

Kosiniak-Kamysz Highlighted That The New Units Will Come With Significant Improvements. “Production Begins Next Year. Between 2028 And 2030, We Aim To Achieve Large-Scale National Manufacturing,” He Stated.

Reinforcement After The War In Ukraine

The Most Important Aspect Is That This New Contract Is The Second Phase Of Poland’s Plan To Acquire Up To 1,000 K2 Tanks. In 2022, The Country Had Already Closed The First Batch With 180 Units.

The War In Ukraine Accelerated Warsaw’s Plan To Strengthen Its Ground Forces.

For This Reason, Poland Decided To Bet On The South Korean Defense Industry, Known For Its High Production Capacity And Flexibility In Transferring Technology.

With This, Poland Establishes Itself As The Largest European Customer Of South Korean Arms.
