Container Traffic Increases by 3.4% at the Port of Rio de Janeiro Compared to 2018. The Total Volume Was 7.42 Million Tons of Cargo

At the Port of Rio de Janeiro, cargo movement in 2019 exceeded expectations and actually surpassed the year 2018. In total, 7.42 million tons of cargo were moved, a 3.4% increase compared to 2018. This result was due to the movement of containers and bulk solids, which rose by 4.7% and 22.3% respectively (measured in tons). Additionally, the port’s balance shows that, considering the standard measurement used to calculate TEU (the volume of a container), the total movement was 370.2 thousand TEU, 6.5% more using this comparison measure. For this measure, the main characteristics were the import and export of full containers (deep-sea navigation).

The ICTSI Rio Terminal stands out for the 1.76 million tons of containerized cargo moved in 2019, a result 13.8% higher compared to 2018. This result was influenced by a 44.57% increase (in units) in cabotage imports at ICTSI Rio.

According to the Rio de Janeiro Dock Company, “It is also worth highlighting the good performance of Triunfo Logística, with a total movement of 2.4 million tons in 2019, which corresponds to a 9.4% increase compared to 2018. The main cargo handled by Triunfo was pig iron, with 1.4 million tons in 2019.”
