Investments in solar energy in the Porto Alegre region are boosted by a new contract. R$114 million will be invested in the generation of clean energy in the city.
On Tuesday (28), the mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, signed the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract for the installation, operation and maintenance of solar power plants in the city. With these investments in solar energy, public facilities maintained by the city of Porto Alegre, such as buildings and traffic lights, will be supplied by the source from 2026.

The project, which was awarded to the consortium Sustainable Energy of the South, aims to guarantee renewable and clean energy for the city, promoting efficiency and economy in the use of public resources. According to the mayor, the public service can be provided by both the public and private sectors, as long as there is efficiency.

The administrative concession has a duration of 26 years, with one year dedicated to the construction of solar power plants in Porto Alegre and 25 years for their operation and maintenance. The signed PPP contract provides for the installation of approximately 11 solar plants with a total generation capacity of 7 million kWh per year.
This clean energy will be used for the activities of 441 public facilities, which range from administrative buildings, health units, public markets, traffic lights, squares and parks. According to the Secretary of Finance, Ana Pellini, this project in Porto Alegre is not only aimed at financial savings, but also a step in line with the city's commitment to becoming a sustainable capital.
Investments in solar energy should reach R$ 114 million
According to Pellini, the benefits expected from the renewable energy project include an estimated saving of R$600 per year in public electricity bills, a reduction of up to 10% in city expenses, in addition to 500 tons of CO2 reduced in the atmosphere.
The total value of the contract is R$114 million, with a focus on monthly public payments throughout the period of activity. The winning consortium established a special purpose company, Energia Sustentável Sul SPE S/A, to manage investments in solar energy in Porto Alegre.
According to Giuseppe Riesgo, Secretary of Partnerships, it is an honor that the first delivery at the head of the Secretariat of Partnerships is such innovative and fundamental investments as the PPP for solar plants.
This initiative reinforces the commitment to resource conservation and sustainability, in addition to positioning Porto Alegre as an example for other municipalities. The construction of the plants will take place in areas within the concession of the distributor CEEE Equatorial, with a deadline of up to 1 year for the facilities to be fully operational.
