Cargo Movement at Docas do Rio – Ports Managed by the Port Authority – Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí, Niterói, and Angra dos Reis, Totaled 53.2 Million Tons in Accumulated From January to October This Year.
The Port of Rio de Janeiro handled a total of 906 thousand tons of cargo in the last month of October. This figure was the highest monthly volume recorded in 2021 so far, exceeding September’s movement by 15.4% and growing 31.1% compared to October 2020.

The Business Planning report from Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) also points out that the revenue of the Port of Rio de Janeiro in October was the second highest of the year, in nominal terms, reaching R$ 20.5 million. This value is 27.8% higher than the revenue from September and 4.3% more than the result achieved in October 2020.

Considering the combined performance of the four ports managed by the Port Authority – Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí, Niterói, and Angra dos Reis – in the accumulated year from January to October, the cargo movement of Docas do Rio totaled 53.2 million tons, which corresponds to an increase of 21.7% compared to the same period in 2020. Only at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the main cargo handled – containerized cargo – has increased by 29.6% compared to the previous year. Combining the containerized cargo movement of the Ports of Rio de Janeiro and Itaguaí, the increase is 13.6% when comparing the accumulated data from 2021 with the same period in 2020.
According to the president of Docas do Rio, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira, “the excellent result recorded in the accumulated data of this year, up to October, reflected in the company’s revenue, which already totals R$945.2 million in 2021 and shows a growth of 78.9% compared to the same period in 2020.” He further analyzed that, only in the last month of October, the revenue of the four ports was R$104.4 million, exceeding 57.6% the revenue of October 2020, and President Laranjeira believes that the Port Authority “will exceed the initial estimate of reaching R$ 1 billion in revenue this year.”
Docas do Rio Participates in the Main Port Sector Congress in Latin America
Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ), responsible for the administration of the Ports of Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí, Niterói, and Angra dos Reis, participates in the XXIX Latin American Ports Congress – AAPA Latino 2021, in Cartagena, Colombia, where it received the certificate of affiliation to the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), which organizes the event in partnership with the Puerto de Cartagena group. The congress began on Monday (29) with a technical visit to the host port and ends on Wednesday (1st).
Represented by the president, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira, the Director of Business and Sustainability, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva, and the Superintendent of Business Sustainability, Gabriela Campagna, Docas do Rio shares an exhibition space with other Port Authorities such as the Companhia Docas do Estado da Bahia (Codeba), Ports of Rio Grande, Ports of Paraná, Porto de Vitória, and Santos Port Authority (SPA). The Brazilian delegation also includes the National Secretary of Ports and Waterway Transport, Diogo Piloni.
On the second day of the event, Tuesday (30), a symbolic delivery was made to the Directors of Docas do Rio of the certificate of the company’s membership to AAPA, which represents more than 130 Public Port Authorities in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The president of Docas do Rio, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira, believes that “the company’s affiliation with the entity promotes closer ties with port authorities in many countries, which can generate mutual benefits” and highlights that “AAPA is a centuries-old institution that promotes the common interests of the port community, has a training and capacity-building program that is interesting for professionals in the sector, and fosters port development in various areas such as trade, transportation, security, infrastructure, and the environment.”
According to the organizers, the congress brings together more than 400 port leaders and international experts in port management from 30 countries, making the forum stand out as the most significant business meeting in the sector. The aim is to discuss perspectives for the future of foreign trade, maritime transport, and ports, and to present investments and projects. Thus, the event is considered a great opportunity to expand the network of contacts, stay updated on the port sector, and promote business relations.
