The Piloting of São Paulo and Abac (Brazilian Association of Cabotage Shipowners) signed an agreement to encourage cabotage navigation. Thus, values, services, and piloting conditions will be in effect for five years without adjustments and will only be corrected monetarily. “At this moment when the Government is promoting and giving greater importance to cabotage navigation and has sent the BR do Mar project to Congress, and the Senate itself presented a project led by Senator Kátia Abreu, making this agreement is a way to show our support,” said the president of Piloting, Carlos Alberto de Souza Filho.

The Piloting of Santos is the one that serves the highest flow of cabotage ships in Brazil. According to Souza Filho, the company decided to forgo part of the revenue, with discounts on operations based on the prices that were charged before. “We are contributing to this national effort to promote cabotage, especially at this time of pandemic. As it is an agreement signed for five years, it provides greater predictability and legal security.” It had been over 15 years since there was a formal agreement between the Piloting of Santos and cabotage shipowners.

Piloting of São Paulo
The Piloting of São Paulo operates in the ports of Santos and São Sebastião, ensuring safety in the entry and exit of ships. There are 62 pilots who work on a scale, all with deep knowledge of the region.
53% of the maneuvers are carried out by the pilots at night, and safety is always a priority. “The probability of an accident happening due to pilot error during maneuvers in the country is 0.002%, similar to the United States, according to a survey by the International Group of P&I Clubs. We belong to the first world in this regard,” said the president of Piloting.
The Piloting of the State of São Paulo has a modern structure with all top-notch equipment and averages 32 daily maneuvers, but as the structure is always set up for peak times and not by average, they can handle up to 80 maneuvers per day, with full safety.
The ABAC
The Brazilian Association of Cabotage Shipowners aims to expand cabotage maritime transport, as well as integration with the Mercosur countries, seeking to regain a prominent position in transoceanic transport. Thus, despite its name indicating “cabotage,” the associated companies also operate in long-distance navigation.
The sector operates in the segments of containers, bulk solids, bulk liquids, and general cargo.
