Expecting to Reduce Thousands of Tons of CO2, the City Hall of São Paulo Plans to Install Solar Energy Panels in 775 Schools and 80 UBSs

The City Hall of São Paulo’s plan to equip at least 775 schools and educational buildings with solar panels is starting to take shape. The Sol da Saúde Consortium, the winner of the bidding for the installation of solar panels in the health sector was published in the Official Gazette of the Municipality this Friday (20). A grant contract for 25 years worth R$ 171.4 thousand or R$ 2 million per year will be signed.

The proposal from Sol da Saúde represented savings close to 40% of what was initially expected, according to the City Hall of São Paulo. Solar panels will be installed in 80 UBSs, potentially reaching, with remote self-consumption, an additional 92 units, totaling 172 units.

In the first year of the project, approximately 5.5 GWh will be produced through the implementation of 3.45 MW of installed capacity, according to the City Hall of São Paulo.

Study Proposals for Installing Panels in Schools Will Arrive in 4 Months

At the schools, the deadline for technical visits for those interested in participating in the expansion planning of the systems has already been completed. The notice for this phase of the service, published at the beginning of last month, sets a deadline of 120 days for the submission of study proposals for the installation of solar energy equipment in São Paulo’s Clean Energy Program.

According to the City Hall, the studies received this semester through the Public Call for the Manifestation of Interest Procedure (PMI), published on 07/14/2021 by the DOM, will shape the PPP, which will have its Edict launched at the beginning of next year.

Solar Panels in Schools and Hospitals Will Avoid 24,000 Tons of CO2

The idea is to expand the solar panel program in Health as an environmentally sustainable way for public school buildings and educational administration.

The plan is to supply schools and serve as an incentive for teaching about environmental preservation and conservation of natural resources, as well as to avoid the emission of 160,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over these 25 years. The municipality of São Paulo also expects an environmental gain by avoiding 24,000 tons of greenhouse gases being emitted, equivalent to the emissions from 15,000 cars.

A reduction in electricity costs of R$ 75 million over 25 years is also expected. The potential savings is 52% per month, totaling economic benefits of R$ 36 million. These funds could be redirected to other priority areas, such as education and health, according to the municipal administration of São Paulo.
