According to Rodrigo Maia, the Postponement of Elections in Municipalities to November May Hinder the Privatization of Eletrobras
On Tuesday, July 7, the President of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia (DEM/RJ), stated that the approval of the privatization of Eletrobras this year may be impacted by the postponement of municipal elections to November. According to him, this is due to the sensitivity of the issue in states where the company’s operations have a significant influence on the local political debate.

“How do you privatize Eletrobras? I’m not saying in my case, I’m 100% in favor and have always supported it, but for deputies from Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, and other states where the Eletrobras system carries significant weight? I believe that the postponement of the election may have affected this debate,” Maia emphasizes.

The President of the Chamber, who took part in an online broadcast promoted by Genial Investimentos, also stated that he does not believe that other significant privatization proposals will be presented.
“The major privatizations that would have a greater impact, such as public banks and Petrobras, I do not see this as an agenda of the Palácio do Planalto. It may be an agenda of part of the Ministry of Economy,” he adds.
Eletrobras was proposed in 1954 by then-President Getúlio Vargas and was effectively established in 1962, under the presidency of João Goulart.
The assets of the state-owned company were once the subject of studies for privatization in the 90s, during the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, when a subsidiary in the southern region was sold, but the plans did not proceed due to political resistance.
More recently, the Ministry of Economy resumed discussions about the privatization of the company.
