The Production, Storage, and Offloading Unit of MODEC Stands Out for Low Emissions and Will Be Installed at the Bacalhau Field

The Japanese provider of floating solutions, MODEC, celebrates the approval in principle (AiP) granted to its floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) by the classification society DNV for the Bacalhau Field. This Abatement notation allows the newly constructed FPSO to become a global benchmark for low emissions, being the first vessel of its kind to bear such certification.

Intended to operate in the ultra-deep waters of the Brazilian pre-salt, at the Bacalhau Field, this unit represents a significant milestone in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency, according to Offshore Energy website.

Bacalhau Project: A Billion-Dollar Investment

The FPSO Bacalhau, which will be deployed at the Bacalhau Field, received the green light after the final investment decision (FID) from Equinor, from Norway, in June 2021, involving an investment of US$ 8 billion. MODEC has been tasked with delivering this unit, marking the first application of the M350 hull, a new generation of hulls for FPSOs developed by the Japanese company.

The FPSO modules left Aibel’s Thai shipyard on January 23, 2024, and are heading to Singapore, where they will be installed aboard the unit. After a comprehensive evaluation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation, according to DNV guidelines, the FPSO Bacalhau has become the first new FPSO to receive the AiP notation for Abatement. This notation requires strict management of emission systems and the implementation of substantial reduction measures to avoid non-emergency flaring and optimize energy and heat generation efficiency.

Sustainability and Low Emission

The vessel, measuring 364 meters in length, 64 meters in width, and 33 meters in depth, has a designed draft of 22.65 meters and a deck area of 17,400 square meters. These dimensions are equivalent to three standard football fields, positioning the FPSO Bacalhau at the forefront of the industry with the lowest carbon emissions per barrel of oil produced.

Eric Powell, Vice President and Director of Operations at MODEC Singapore, emphasized: “Receiving the DNV Abatement notation is a statement of our commitment to developing a sustainable future. We do our part in mitigating climate change by minimizing greenhouse gases and other emissions in our business operations and supply chain, and developing clean energy solutions to achieve global goals.”

Capacity and Operations

With a production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day, the FPSO Bacalhau will be deployed at the Bacalhau Field, located in the BM-S-8 and Carcará North licenses, in the pre-salt region of the Santos Basin, off the coast of Brazil. The forecast is that first oil will be extracted in 2025. Recoverable reserves, including the Bacalhau North area, are estimated at over two billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe). Equinor operates the field in partnership with ExxonMobil, Petrogal Brasil, and Pré-Sal Petróleo SA (PPSA).
