Agency Holds Public Hearing to Assess the Construction Project of the NF 2 Power Plant, Which Will Have 1,713 MW of Capacity and Will Be Installed in Macaé by EDF
The EDF North Fluminense of Brazil plans to build a new natural gas power plant in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro state. The project was submitted to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), which held a public hearing on the proposal this Wednesday (07).

The Public Hearing is an event that is part of the environmental licensing process, as mandated by CONAMA Resolution 01/1986. It presents the main characteristics of the project and information contained in the EIA and RIMA regarding impacts on the environment and the population’s life.
The Norte Fluminense Power Plant 2 will have 1,713 MW of installed capacity for electricity generation from natural gas combustion. This capacity corresponds to 19% of the installed generation capacity in the state of Rio de Janeiro, potentially serving the consumption of about 5.2 million people across the country.

The national grid supply will be provided through a 500kV transmission line connecting the Campos 2 substation in Campos dos Goytacazes to the future Lagos substation in Rio das Ostras, which is also undergoing environmental licensing.
The construction of the NF 2 power plant, along with the gas pipeline and transmission line, is expected to take 48 months. No investment amount has been disclosed. The company already operates a plant in Macaé, the Norte Fluminense Power Plant, which is powered by natural gas produced in the Campos Basin.

Other Power Plant Projects in Macaé
A consortium formed by Shell, Pátria Investimentos, and Mitsubishi will be responsible for the Marlim Azul plant, with a capacity of 565.5 MW, which will begin operating in 2023, utilizing gas from the pre-salt fields.
The Brazilian Eneva and BP Energy also foresee a 1,355 MW plant in Macaé, which will be powered by LNG supplied by the British oil company, the Nossa Senhora de Fátima power plant.
