The body holds a public hearing to evaluate the construction project for the Thermoelectric Plant NF 2, which will have 1.713 MW of power and will be installed in Macaé by EDF

A EDF Norte Fluminense do Brasil plans to build a new natural gas thermoelectric power plant in Macaé, state of Rio de Janeiro. The project was forwarded to the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), which held a public hearing on the proposal this Wednesday (07th).

The Public Hearing is an event that is part of the environmental licensing process, provided for by CONAMA Resolution 01/1986. It presents the main characteristics of the project and information contained in the EIA and RIMA on the impacts on the environment and on the life of the population.

The Norte Fluminense 2 Thermoelectric Plant will have 1.713 MW of installed capacity to generate electricity from the burning of natural gas. This power corresponds to 19% of the installed generation capacity in the state of Rio de Janeiro, being able to meet the consumption of around 5,2 million people across the country.

The supply of the national grid will be done through a 500kV transmission line that will connect the Campos 2 substation, in Campos dos Goytacazes, to the future Lagos substation, in Rio das Ostras, which is also in the process of environmental licensing.

Construction of the NF 2 thermoelectric plant, in addition to the gas pipeline and transmission line, should take 48 months. No investment amount was provided. The company already operates a plant in Macaé, Usina Termelétrica Norte Fluminense, which runs on natural gas produced in the Campos basin.

Other thermoelectric power plant projects in Macaé

A consortium formed by Shell, Pátria Investimentos and Mitsubishi will be responsible for the Marlim Azul plant, with 565,5 MW of capacity, which will start operating in 2023, using gas from the pre-salt fields.

The Brazilian Eneva and BP Energy also plans a 1.355 MW plant in Macaé, which will be powered by LNG supplied by the British oil company, the Nossa Senhora de Fátima thermoelectric plant.
