Petrobras has suspended its pilot project for offshore wind energy generation in the Potiguar Basin, on the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte

The Brazilian state-owned company decided to suspend the pilot project for offshore wind power generation in Campo de Ubarana, located in the Potiguar Basin, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. The decision of Petrobras was marked by the following announcement in a letter sent to Ibama: “reassessed and suspended, while the company prospects opportunities for synergies and partnerships with the objective of developing a commercial offshore wind generation project in Brazil”.

In the pilot project, a tower and a wind turbine would be installed, in addition to other equipment to measure the potential for offshore wind energy generation. The project would be located 20 km from the coast of Grumaré, with an LDA (water depth) of 12 to 16 meters.

The company has opted out of the renewable energy sectors, both in suspending the aforementioned project and also in the biofuels part. According to the company, the measures are part of maximizing returns for shareholders.

However, Petrobras' strategy began to be questioned by market analysts. Last month, during the presentation of the company's results (record profit of BRL 40 billion), the company was asked whether the brake on the energy transition could not impact the company's reputation and competitiveness in the future.

The company's financial director, Andrea Almeida, pointed out: "I think that after two more years of hard work the company will be more competitive and will be prepared to conclude which will be the competitive areas in renewables for Petrobras".
