Elon Musk Appointed to Lead the Department of Government Efficiency in the Donald Trump Administration, Initially Proposed Cutting US$ 2 Trillion from the U.S. Federal Budget

Elon Musk, technology mogul and now leader of a new initiative for federal spending reduction, has backtracked on his initial goal of cutting US$ 2 trillion from the United States budget.

The statement was made during an interview with political strategist Mark Penn, broadcast on platform X last Wednesday (10).

Elon Musk stated that the number was merely an “ideal scenario” and that, in practice, a more realistic goal would be to cut spending in half, achieving US$ 1 trillion.

The revision of the estimate marks a significant retreat from what he had previously promised. During a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in October, the billionaire declared that he could cut “at least US$ 2 trillion.”

However, experts quickly pointed out that the figure was impossible, given that the total discretionary budget of the government is only US$ 1.7 trillion.

Musk’s initiative, dubbed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is being led jointly with Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate.

Despite the unusual name inspired by an internet meme, the proposal seeks to present recommendations for cuts to the Trump government, should he be re-elected.

Criticism from Experts to Elon Musk

Federal budget analysts have criticized the idea as fanciful, especially considering that significant cuts would require touching mandatory programs, such as Medicaid, which serves low-income populations.

Cutting the discretionary budget doesn’t come close to the amounts mentioned,” pointed out an expert from the Brookings Institution.

Furthermore, Elon Musk’s proposal to achieve “additional economic growth to offset deficits” was met with skepticism.

Although Elon Musk claimed that a reduced deficit would stimulate the economy without causing inflation, critics argue that this approach ignores the complexities of fiscal and monetary policies.

An Ambitious but Difficult Target

In the interview, Musk acknowledged that reaching the US$ 2 trillion target would be challenging, but he remained confident in achieving “epic results.” He explained that cutting the deficit in half would already be a historic achievement:

If we can reduce the deficit from US$ 2 trillion to US$ 1 trillion and stimulate economic growth, it will be a big step forward. This would prevent inflation and free up resources for investments,” he emphasized.

Despite his confidence, Musk avoided detailing where the cuts would be made. When asked by Penn about specific areas to save, the billionaire only stated that the federal government presents a “very rich environment for targets” for cost reduction, without specifying programs or departments.

Comparisons with Previous Administrations

During the dialogue, Penn mentioned the success of former President Bill Clinton in balancing the budget at the end of his administration and questioned Musk about his long-term vision. The billionaire acknowledged Clinton’s achievement but highlighted that the current context is more complicated due to the increase in the deficit in recent years.

It’s a much harder task today, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try,” he declared. “The important thing is to have ambitious goals, even if the outcome falls short.

Reactions from Trump’s Transition Team

Donald Trump’s transition team has not yet commented on Elon Musk’s new projection. However, the relationship between the billionaire and the former president seems increasingly close, with Elon Musk participating in events and actively promoting Trump’s ideas.

For some critics, the creation of the DOGE is seen as a more symbolic initiative than practical. Without official power, the panel led by Musk and Ramaswamy relies on having their suggestions accepted by the government.

The choice of name, inspired by the famous meme dog, has also faced criticism, being deemed by some as a reflection of the proposal’s unserious tone.

The Budget Challenge

Regardless of Musk’s ambitious goals, the federal budget of the United States remains one of the country’s greatest economic challenges.

With a projected deficit of US$ 2 trillion in 2024, experts point out that significant reductions can only be achieved through structural reforms in programs like Medicare, Social Security, and Defense.

Musk, for his part, appears determined to leave his mark on economic policy, even as his proposals face resistance. “We need innovative solutions, no matter how difficult they are to implement,” he stated, concluding the interview.

As the billionaire adjusts his expectations, the future of the federal budget remains uncertain, with debates over cuts and investments likely dominating the political agenda in the coming months.
