The Transnordestina Advances Rapidly Through the Sertão, Driving Investments and Changing the Logistics Landscape in Northeastern Brazil. The Project Connects Strategic Cities and Promises to Reduce Costs, Strengthen Exports, and Generate Regional Opportunities.

After decades of uncertainty, the Transnordestina – one of the most emblematic projects in the Brazilian logistics sector – has left behind the image of an unfinished project and is advancing at an accelerated pace through the northeastern sertão.

With 676 kilometers already delivered and about 75% of the first phase completed, the railway takes on the contours of reality and promises to transform the logistics and economic landscape of the region.

The project, which has already consumed investments of R$ 1.4 billion until July 2025, is scheduled to start assisted operations later this year, according to information from the Ministry of Transportation.

Northeast Railway Drives Exports and Connects Regions

Designed to connect Eliseu Martins, in southern Piauí, to the port of Pecém, in São Gonçalo do Amarante, on the coast of Ceará, the Transnordestina has a main route length of 1,200 kilometers.

The goal is strategic: to integrate the interior of the Northeast with one of the most modern ports in the country, facilitating the export of grains, fuels, and minerals, as well as optimizing costs and logistical timelines.

The route crosses fundamental municipalities, such as Paulistana, Trindade, Salgueiro, Iguatu, Quixadá, and Caucaia, in addition to offering direct access to the large port terminal.

The project was structured to operate heavy freight trains, adopting a broad gauge of 1.60 meters, continuously welded rails, and intermodal terminals, which elevates transport capacity and operational efficiency.

Transnordestina Strengthens the Brazilian North Logistics Arc

The railway, considered a key piece in the so-called Brazilian north logistics arc, integrates the main national export corridors and responds to a historical demand for the movement of agricultural production from Matopiba – an agricultural frontier that encompasses Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia.

In addition, the Transnordestina contributes to the consolidation of the port of Pecém as one of the most prominent port hubs in the export of commodities to the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Project History and Overcome Challenges

The project was conceived in the 1990s but only began formally in 2006, when Transnordestina Logística S.A. (TLSA) took over the concession.

Initially, it aimed to link Eliseu Martins, the port of Pecém, and the port of Suape in Pernambuco.

However, in 2017, the Pernambuco section was suspended due to technical and financial infeasibility, concentrating efforts on the so-called “phase one.”

Obstacles such as stoppages, environmental embargoes, contract revisions, and allegations of financial irregularities marked the project’s history, which for years became known as a symbol of waste and unfulfilled promises.

The delivery forecast changed several times, moving from 2010 to 2016, then to 2020, and for a long time was left out of federal investment priority plans.

Restructuring and Resuming Railway Works

The turning point began in 2022, when the project underwent restructuring and gained a new schedule, in addition to receiving additional funds from both public and private sectors.

The enterprise was reintegrated into federal infrastructure programs, allowing effective resumption of fieldwork.

Since then, the railway has experienced its greatest progress, with active construction fronts and schedules being met.

As of July 2025, official data point to 676 kilometers of completed tracks, confirming the physical evolution of 75% of the first phase.

Main Sections and Recent Investments

Among the priority sections under construction, the segment between Quixadá and Baturité, in Ceará, stands out.

With a length of 46 kilometers and an investment of R$ 1 billion from the Northeast Development Fund (FDNE), this stage is essential to ensure the connection of the interior to the railway’s final axis, enabling continuous flow to the coast.

The works on segment 8 began in mid-2024, with completion expected by December 2025.

Another relevant segment is lot 11, which connects Caucaia to the port of Pecém via 26 kilometers of tracks.

The service order for this segment was signed in January 2025, with construction starting in the first quarter of the year and direct oversight from the Ceará government, which sees the project as an opportunity for regional logistics integration.

Modernization and Cutting-Edge Railway Technology

The recent financial boost, with an injection of R$ 1.4 billion announced in July 2025 by the federal government, accelerated the pace of construction even further.

The investment, sourced from the FDNE and public banks, is earmarked exclusively for the completion of the first phase by 2027, with initial operations already scheduled for consolidated sections in 2025.

The Ministry of Transportation confirms that the goal is to deliver the entire phase one within the new schedule.

From a technical standpoint, the railway stands out for its use of continuously welded rails, a technology that minimizes vibrations and wear on the trains, ensuring greater durability of the infrastructure and safety for the compositions.

The broad gauge of 1.60 meters allows for the transport of heavier loads with greater stability, increasing capacity to up to 30 million tons per year.

The expectation is that agricultural movement from Matopiba will gain competitiveness, as railway transport offers an estimated reduction of 30% in logistics costs, in addition to shortening the distance to ports by up to 40%.

Environmental Impacts and Regional Development

According to TLSA technicians, the efficiency of the railway model also brings positive environmental impacts.

The substitution of road transport by trains helps to reduce CO2 emissions, decrease accidents on highways, and optimize the use of the national road network, in addition to enhancing the energy efficiency of the logistics system.

Expectations for the Second Phase and the Future of Transnordestina

The future of Transnordestina also foresees an expansion of the railway network, with a possible acceleration of phase two, which envisions the resumption of works to integrate Pernambuco and the port of Suape into the logistics corridor.

The outlook, according to industry sources, is for the start of works by 2027, reinforcing the railway’s role in transforming the Northeast into a modern and integrated export hub.
