With Investments of R$ 1.5 Billion, The New Construction in Brazil Promises to Transform Serra das Araras into a Model of Modern and Efficient Infrastructure with the SP to RJ Highway.

The SP to RJ highway is about to experience one of the biggest milestones in its history. The new construction in Brazil promises to eliminate the historical bottlenecks of Serra das Araras, turning one of the most critical segments of Via Dutra into an example of modernity, safety, and sustainability. This project, which is already making waves in the region, has the potential to revolutionize transportation between the two largest economic centers in the country.

The Challenge of Serra das Araras

Few regions represent as much of a challenge as Serra das Araras. This winding stretch of the SP to RJ highway, with its tight curves and steep climbs, is known for causing slowdowns and accidents. More than 390,000 vehicles traverse the area monthly, with 36% being trucks and cargo vehicles, which transport more than half of Brazil’s GDP.

The expansion of Serra das Araras includes innovative solutions such as four lanes in each direction, modern shoulders, and safety systems. As a result, the average speed in the stretch could double from 40 km/h to 80 km/h, reducing travel time by up to 50% on the descent to Rio de Janeiro and 25% on the ascent to São Paulo.

A New Era for the SP to RJ Highway

The work is being carried out by CCR Rio-SP, with completion expected between 2028 and 2029. In addition to road improvements, the new construction in Brazil brings significant economic impacts, generating 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and a robust investment in sustainable infrastructure.

Highlights of the project include:

24 viaducts and 2 escape ramps, ensuring additional safety;

Improvement of 14 accesses and creation of 3 pedestrian bridges;

Installation of lighting and monitoring throughout the stretch, as well as 5G connectivity;

Reuse of materials to minimize environmental impacts.

Sustainability in Focus

Sustainability is a central pillar of the expansion. The construction of the viaducts will preserve watercourses and serve as an ecological corridor for local wildlife. Additionally, 1.8 million cubic meters of excavated soil will be reused, reducing the carbon footprint and promoting greener engineering practices.

Local and National Impact

The new construction in Brazil will also bring positive impacts to the surrounding communities. Municipalities like Piraí and Paracambi will see an increase in tax revenue, allowing for investments in health, education, and infrastructure. Small local merchants, such as fruit vendors, will also be given dedicated spaces, ensuring that modernization includes everyone.

With the SP to RJ highway as the protagonist, the expansion of Serra das Araras is much more than an infrastructure project: it is a symbol of innovation and transformation. When completed in 2029, it will not only connect São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro but will also stand as a landmark of efficiency and modernity that will influence the future of logistics and mobility in Brazil.
