Abreu e Lima Refinery in Pernambuco Has the Highest Conversion of Oil into Diesel in the Country and Meets the Growing Demand of the North-Northeast Region with Cutting-Edge Technology.
The Abreu e Lima Refinery, located in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, has been consolidating its role as a key player in meeting the national demand for oil derivatives.
Inaugurated in 2014, the unit is Brazil’s most modern refinery and boasts the highest crude oil to diesel conversion rate, achieving 70% utilization. Located 45 km from Recife at the Suape Port Industrial Complex, the refinery is operated with high standards of automation and sustainability.
The refinery’s project was designed to operate with maximum efficiency and safety, adhering to international quality standards and environmental respect. One of the main objectives of the unit is to reduce dependence on imports, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.

Production Capacity and Focus on Low-Sulfur Diesel
With a processing capacity of 88,000 barrels per day (about 36,600 m³/day), the Abreu e Lima Refinery’s main product is Diesel S-10.
This fuel has a low sulfur content — only 10 parts per million — and stands out by reducing particulate matter emissions by up to 80% and nitrogen oxides by up to 98%, contributing to environmental preservation.
In addition to diesel, the refinery also produces naphtha, fuel oil, coke, and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
Its structure allows flexibility in using different types of oil, ensuring greater operational reliability and lower environmental impact.
Technology, Automation, and Sustainability at the Refinery
The refinery has two sets of independent refining units, allowing for greater control and flexibility in the industrial process. Among these units are:
- Two Atmospheric Distillation Units (UDA)
- Two Delayed Coking Units (UCR)
- Two Diesel Hydrotreatment Units (HDT-D)
- Two Naphtha Hydrotreatment Units (HDT-N)
- Two Hydrogen Generation Units (UGH)
- Two Emissions Reduction Units (SNOX)
These structures ensure a continuous and safe process, with low maintenance costs and high energy performance.
The rational use of water and environmental control systems reinforce RNEST’s commitment to sustainability.
Abreu e Lima Refinery Strengthens the Industry and Regional Supply
Since it began operations, the Abreu e Lima Refinery has played a fundamental role in supplying oil derivatives in Brazil.

Its focus on supplying the North and Northeast regions has contributed to reducing the need for imports and increasing national energy security.
By integrating innovation, environmental responsibility, and productive capacity, the refinery marks a new phase for the oil and gas sector in the country.
The unit also symbolizes the revival of major energy infrastructure projects, after more than three decades without the construction of a new refinery in Brazil.
