Leading The Green Revolution Through Innovation And Sustainability
Hydro, a renowned integrated global company in aluminum and energy, has been implementing creative solutions for environmental preservation, establishing a strong commitment to sustainable development in the communities where it operates.
With a strong alignment to the goal of promoting more sustainable societies, Hydro develops natural resources into products and solutions in an innovative and efficient manner. Sustainability is a central pillar in the company’s structure, which maintains high standards of control, monitoring, and prevention to minimize the carbon footprint and preserve biodiversity.
Investing In Decarbonization And Renewable Energies
As part of its strategy to combat climate change, Hydro aims to achieve zero emissions in the production of its aluminum by 2050. To reach this goal, the company is changing the energy matrix of Alunorte, the largest aluminum refinery in the world outside of China, located in Pará. In 2022, Alunorte took a big step in this direction, installing a new electric boiler, the largest in the world, with plans for four more in the coming years.

Reforestation And Biodiversity Actions
Hydro’s commitment to environmental recovery extends to the reforestation of the Amazon biome. The company is proud to have reforested over 2,900 hectares since the beginning of its operations. In addition, the company has been striving to improve the lives of people living near its operations, highlighting the crucial role of sustainability and environmental education in its initiatives.
Hydro also focuses on preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon, and the bauxite mine in Paragominas, Pará, has been an important site for scientific studies aimed at the reforestation of mined areas. The company’s efforts in this regard align with the goal of ensuring no net loss of biodiversity in new projects.
Hydro Rein: Pioneer In Renewable Energy
In 2021, Hydro took another significant step toward sustainability by launching Hydro Rein, an initiative dedicated to providing renewable energy solutions for industry and society at large. With significant investments and innovative projects, Hydro Rein is building a sustainable energy future for the industry, with Brazil playing a strategic role in its vision.
Hydro’s advancements in decarbonization, renewable energies, biodiversity, and reforestation—
Commitment To Sustainability Through Technological Innovation
The company operating in the aluminum and energy sector has made considerable progress in environmental preservation by developing innovative solutions that help protect biodiversity and reverse the effects of climate change. Undoubtedly, Hydro has made a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates.
Leadership In Combating Climate Change
Hydro is aligned with the Paris Agreement, an international agreement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company has set a goal to achieve zero carbon emissions in aluminum production by 2050 and aims to lead the supply of zero-carbon aluminum at an industrial scale by 2030.
In this regard, Hydro has been working to reduce its dependence on coal in its operations. The company has been exploring other cleaner and renewable energy sources, such as green hydrogen and biomass from açaí seeds.
Additionally, the fuel oil used at the refinery will be replaced by natural gas (LNG). This R$ 1.3 billion investment is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 700 thousand tons annually, significantly improving air quality.
Reforestation: A Priority For Hydro
Hydro understands the importance of preserving biodiversity and, therefore, has invested in reforestation. The company has already reforested over 2,900 hectares of the Amazon biome, equivalent to more than 2,900 soccer fields.
Hydro employs three techniques for forest restoration: nucleation, natural regeneration, and traditional planting. In 2022, Hydro Paragominas planted 75,449 seedlings of 131 species from 39 families adaptable to the region’s reality.
Environmental Education And Technology
Hydro is also committed to environmental education and the dissemination of information about conservation. To this end, the company maintains an ecological trail that hosts orchids, bromeliads, native forest species, and vulnerable species.
Furthermore, Hydro partnered with the startup Ludus Tecnologia to launch a virtual ecological trail that uses Augmented Reality (AR) to provide a more interactive and engaging educational experience.
Conservation Of Biodiversity In The Amazon
Hydro’s bauxite mine in Paragomina (PA) has been the site of various research initiatives focused on biodiversity conservation. Hydro has invested in research to improve forest recovery techniques and conserve the fauna and flora of the Amazon.
Hydro Rein: Promoting Renewable Energy In Industry
In 2021, Hydro took an important step by launching Hydro Rein, a subsidiary aimed at providing renewable energy solutions for industry. Hydro Rein focuses on designing clean energy projects and operations that are not only efficient but also environmentally responsible. This further aligns Hydro with the global movement towards sustainability and combating climate change.
