Unprecedented Partnership Brings New Glass Factory to Rio de Janeiro, with Investment of R$ 100 Million and Promise to Generate Thousands of Jobs, Significantly Boosting the Local Economy.

The City Hall of Maricá, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has started negotiations to build a new glass factory, which will be the first in the country, expected to generate 2,500 jobs and estimated to receive R$ 100 million in investments. The project aims to fill a national gap in glass production and will be built in partnership with the company Oz Earth and the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST).

New Glass Factory Will Have Capacity to Produce Up to 250 Tons

The initiative, which promises to generate thousands of jobs in Rio de Janeiro, plans the installation of a new glass factory with a multi-million investment capable of producing up to 250 tons of products per day, with 70% of materials recycled, having a low environmental impact.

The factory will be implemented on an area between 10 and 15 hectares, still in the selection process. According to Mayor Washington Quaquá, the goal of the initiative is to establish a glass industry.

From the collected material, the intention is to transform it into tiles for the construction industry. Brazil does not have a glass industry; therefore, the city hall is partnering with MST and is in talks with two major breweries to produce bottles and jars at the new glass factory in Maricá.

The investment in the project that will create thousands of jobs in Rio de Janeiro is R$ 100 million, and it aims to create 250 direct jobs, 1,500 jobs focused on glass recycling, and 750 indirect positions at different stages of the production chain.

Understand the Operation of the New Glass Factory in Rio de Janeiro

According to Hamilton Lacerda, president of Codemar, the team from the Codemar Management and Participation Board had a very productive conversation during the meeting, working to align and strengthen the project in Rio de Janeiro, which will receive multi-million investments. It is still in the planning phase, followed by the installation phase of the new glass factory, and soon after, the operation.

This will be yet another major development contributing to the growth of Maricá, fully aligned with government plans.

Referring to the sustainability of the project, which will create thousands of jobs, the director of Oz Earth’s Agroindustry, Leodimar Ferreira, stated that an important detail of this new glass factory is that it is physical, not chemical.

Thus, there is no chemical transformation during the process, taking sand, the main raw material, and turning it into glass. There are few industrial residues during manufacturing. Not to mention the removal of this glass that would go into the environment through recycling. Therefore, it has a very low environmental impact.

Benefits of Glass Recycling

Glass, when discarded in the environment, does not pollute it, as its material is inert, meaning it does not degrade or break down.

However, considering the volume in landfills, it is necessary to agree that glass is a champion of debris, especially since it cannot be compacted like paper, which can lead to dangerous sharp shards.

It is possible to affirm that glass is the most society-friendly packaging material. If the entire population were aware of the benefits of glass recycling, it would be possible to fully reuse packaging with great ecological, economic, and social benefits. These characteristics are unique to glass, which, in addition to its advantages as a material, adds the benefit of recycling. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled countless times without losses in the process.
