Meet The Essential Professionals Who Keep São Paulo Running, Ensuring Vital Services For Daily Life In The Largest Metropolis In Brazil. Discover How They Impact The City’s Routine.

The largest city in Brazil never stops. With over 12 million inhabitants, São Paulo is a living organism that operates 24 hours a day, driven by the work of thousands of professionals in different sectors.

While some of these workers are constantly in the spotlight, many others perform their duties behind the scenes, ensuring that urban infrastructure remains operational.

This article highlights the essential professions that sustain the daily functioning of the Paulist metropolis, with a special focus on hydraulic maintenance services, such as drain cleaning services in the south zone of São Paulo and leak detection services in São Bernardo do Campo, in the Greater ABC region.

The Job Market In São Paulo In Numbers

São Paulo leads the ranking of job creation in Brazil, continuing to be one of the main destinations for those seeking new professional opportunities.

According to recent data released by LinkedIn, various sectors have shown significant growth in the capital in recent years, with a focus on education and finance.

Currently, the city has approximately 41,841 job openings in different areas, according to data from the Empregos portal.

Among the most sought-after positions are store assistants, internal sales assistants, parking and telemarketing operators, as well as opportunities for interns and apprentice learners. This diversity reflects the complex economic structure that keeps the city in constant motion.

Urban Cleaning Professionals: Invisible, But Essential

Every day, the city of São Paulo collects approximately 12,000 tons of household waste, totaling about 360,000 tons monthly.

Behind these impressive numbers are the street sweepers and other urban cleaning professionals, essential workers for the maintenance of public health and collective well-being.

The work of street sweepers goes far beyond simple garbage collection. These professionals ensure the cleanliness and conservation of public spaces, removing waste that, if accumulated, could cause clogged drains, floods, and sanitary problems.

With their brooms and collection equipment, they sweep streets, sidewalks, and other public areas, eliminating everything from improperly discarded items to organic waste and dry leaves.

To perform this function, the requirements include motivation and dedication, a sense of community, good physical condition, and the ability to work as a team.

Although often undervalued, the profession of street sweeper is fundamental to urban quality of life and deserves proper recognition.

Urban Mobility: The Pulse Of The City

Public transportation is another vital sector for the functioning of São Paulo. Bus drivers are responsible for connecting various points in the city, allowing the daily movement of millions of workers.

These professionals face considerable challenges, from intense urban traffic to the responsibility of safely transporting large numbers of passengers.

Job openings for public transport drivers in São Paulo require, in addition to specific qualifications (categories D or E), the ability to make daily trips along pre-established routes, respond to requests for passenger boarding and alighting, and regularly check the vehicle’s condition, including tires, doors, brakes, and water and oil levels.

In addition to drivers, train operators also play a crucial role in Paulist mobility, ensuring the operation of one of the busiest metro systems in the world.

Hydraulic Maintenance Services: Solutions For Invisible Problems

Maintaining hydraulic infrastructure in perfect working order is essential to avoid losses, water waste, and structural issues in residential, commercial, or industrial properties.

Often, small leaks, infiltrations, and clogs go unnoticed in daily life, only being noticed when they have already caused damage or significantly increased the water bill.

Therefore, hydraulic maintenance services are becoming increasingly important, offering modern and efficient solutions to quickly identify and resolve these problems that are invisible to the eye, but could compromise the entire structure of the property if not addressed in time.

Drain Cleaning Services In The South Zone: 24-Hour Emergency Service

Among the essential services for building maintenance in São Paulo, drain cleaning services stand out.

In the south zone of the city, which includes populous neighborhoods such as Santo Amaro, Campo Limpo, Ipiranga, Moema, and Vila Mariana, various companies offer specialized service for clog situations.

Companies with decades of experience provide 24-hour emergency services in the south of São Paulo, with teams capable of quickly resolving plumbing issues. Some have service providers in different neighborhoods, ensuring faster response times.

There are options specialized in unclogging sinks, drains, tanks, toilets, and collecting columns. Many use electric drain cleaning machines with rotating systems or high-pressure water jetting, technologies that allow the clearing of any type of plumbing.

Clogging problems are common in large cities and can occur at any time. Therefore, many drain cleaning services in the south zone offer 24-hour service, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays.

The prices for these services vary, with some offering promotional discounts, advertising rates starting at R$79.90 per linear meter.

Leak Detection In São Bernardo Do Campo: Technology At The Service Of The Economy

In São Bernardo do Campo, a municipality neighboring the capital, leak detection services have gained prominence due to their economic and environmental importance.

Companies use cutting-edge technology to detect hidden leaks in underground pipes or within walls.

Hidden leaks can be very difficult to detect visually, occurring in underground pipes or inside structures, causing constant water loss and reflecting on monthly bills.

In addition to water waste, these problems can cause serious structural damage to properties if not corrected quickly.

There are companies that offer hydraulic leak detection services in São Bernardo do Campo for prices starting at R$149, using modern techniques such as geophones, which precisely locate the origin of leaks through specific sounds emitted by escaping water.

Others provide not only leak location services but also detailed technical reports that can be presented to the sanitation company, potentially allowing reductions of up to 50% in the charges during the period the leak was active.

Among the technologies used are detection via hydrophone (for underwater leaks), geophone (for hidden leaks detected acoustically), pressurization tests, pointer tests, and the use of chemical tracers.

Professions On The Rise In The Capital

LinkedIn recently released a list of the 10 job positions that have grown the most in the capital in recent years. Among the highlighted positions are special education teachers, travel agents, and medical secretaries.

Special education teachers, who lead the ranking, are responsible for helping students with learning difficulties and different disabilities, adapting lessons to meet individual needs.

Travel agents, in second place, plan itineraries and make travel arrangements for individuals, groups, or companies.

In third place are medical secretaries, who perform administrative tasks in healthcare settings, such as scheduling appointments and managing patient records.

An interesting fact is the gender division in these hires. Among special education teachers, 76.19% of contracted professionals in 2024 are women, while among travel agents this percentage is 68.32%, and among medical secretaries it reaches 86.67%.

Sweeping And Public Cleaning Professionals

The Executive Secretariat of Urban Cleaning (SELIMP) in São Paulo is responsible for another crucial service for the city: manual sweeping of public roads and areas.

The teams sweep streets, sidewalks, and squares, collecting trash and debris, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

In addition to sweeping, SELIMP maintains street bins (public trash cans) strategically distributed in high-traffic public areas, such as near metro stations, bus terminals, schools, hospitals, and shopping centers.

Voluntary Delivery Points (PEVs) are also available, closed containers where citizens can deposit recyclable materials for later processing.

The Value Of Essential Work

Despite the fundamental importance for the functioning of the city, many of the professions highlighted in this article still suffer from a lack of proper recognition.

Average salaries in São Paulo, although higher than the national average for several professions, do not always reflect the essential nature of these services.

For example, while a general practitioner in São Paulo earns an average of R$12,688, a salary 23% higher than the national average, professionals in essential operational areas often earn close to the minimum wage.

This disparity highlights the need for a more balanced appreciation of work in a metropolis that depends on the collective effort of workers at all levels.
