Swiss ABB Will Provide Electrical And Automation Equipment For The New Vessels P-84 And P-85, Which Aim To Reduce Emissions And Increase Efficiency In Oil Production.
Seatrium, from Singapore, awarded a large contract to ABB, a technology company based in Switzerland. The agreement provides for the supply of electrical equipment and automation for a new generation of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels. These units are intended for Petrobras and will operate off the Brazilian coast.
ABB Will Provide Systems For The Units In Brazil
ABB will be responsible for designing and building the top and hull electrical equipment. The company will also handle the automation of electrical substations and eHouses. The systems will be installed on the FPSOs P-84 and P-85. The vessels will be deployed in the Atapu and Sépia fields, about 200 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
Billion-Dollar Contract Aimed At Emission Reduction
Seatrium signed a contract worth US$ 8.15 billion in 2024 for the two FPSOs. The vessels are classified as “fully electric.” The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% per barrel of oil. To achieve this, they will use compressors and electric motors with a generation capacity of 165 MW. Operations are expected to commence in 2029.

With a length of 225 meters and a capacity of 76 thousand tons, this ship “sinks” its own deck down to 28 meters deep to accommodate war destroyers, oil platforms, and giant radars floating above, and then emerges with everything intact on top like a colossal tray crossing oceans.

A 100-meter platform without a motor, without a keel, and operating upside down rotates 90 degrees in the ocean, sinks 75 meters, and drifts around Antarctica for two years driven by the planet’s most powerful current to study the largest carbon sink on Earth, still poorly understood by science for accurate climate modeling.

With a length of 108 meters and a giant spoon shape, the FLIP was the only ship in the world capable of rotating 90 degrees in the ocean and remaining vertical, with 91 meters submerged, operating for 60 years until it was retired and sent to the scrapyard in 2023.
Innovative Technology For Safety And Operational Efficiency
Petrobras will utilize ABB Ability System 800xA and IEC 61850 technologies. These will allow seamless interoperability between the electrical devices on the vessels. The project also marks the first offshore application of ABB’s three Is-limiters configuration. These devices are vital for effectively managing short circuits. They prevent damage to electrical components and reduce stress on the system. The top systems will be installed in an eHouse, a pre-fabricated transportable substation.
National Production And Delivery Schedule Of The Vessels
Part of the equipment will be produced in Brazil. ABB’s factory in Sorocaba (SP) will manufacture the UniGear ZS1 distribution board. The construction of the vessels P-84 and P-85 began in 2024. The delivery of the eHouses from the Swiss company is scheduled for 2027.
High Production Capacity And Potential Of The Brazilian Market
Each of the new vessels will have the capacity to produce 225,000 barrels of oil per day. According to ABB, the Brazilian FPSO market remains a source of growth. The offshore energy sector has an estimated potential investment of US$ 21 billion for 2026-2027. Per Erik Holsten, president of ABB’s Energy Industries division, highlighted the company’s commitment to energy efficiency and high safety standards to meet complex projects like this one.
