Unions of Petrobras Employees Prepare to Strike Against Privatization of the Oil Company
The Unique Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) and its affiliated unions, representing Petrobras employees, will end the year 2021 in a state of national strike as a form of protest against the Federal Government’s intentions to privatize Petrobras. According to union information, a vast majority of participants approved joining the strike against privatization in meetings held nationwide, up until last Wednesday, December 22.

In reality, this means that if President Jair Bolsonaro presents a bill to Congress to privatize Petrobras, the unions will initiate a new strike. And according to the general coordinator of the FUP, Deyvid Bacelar, it will be one of the strongest in the history of the oil sector, similar to those that occurred in 1995 and 2020.
The organization states that on November 30, Petrobras completed the sale of the Landulpho Alves Refinery (RLAM) in Bahia to the Mubadala fund for US$ 1.65 billion, and that this amount is “about 50% lower compared to the estimated calculations in a study by the Institute for Strategic Studies of Oil, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (Ineep).” In 2021, contracts for the sale of the Isaac Sabbá Refinery (REMAN) in Amazonas and the Shale Industrialization Unit (SIX) in Paraná were also closed.

“We will respond accordingly and will do everything to protect the assets that still belong to the state company,” comments the FUP coordinator regarding the strike reaction to the possibility of Petrobras privatization.
In a statement issued by the federation, it was stated that according to a survey by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese), from March 2015 to November 2021, Petrobras restricted 78 assets, 70 in Brazil and 8 abroad.
Of this total of assets, 76% were sold during President Jair Bolsonaro’s government, for R$ 152 billion. Some of them began the sales process even during the previous government of Michel Temer.
About Petrobras
Petrobras is a Brazilian oil company, with the Federal Government as its majority shareholder. It is engaged in the exploration, production, refining, transportation, and commercialization of oil and its derivatives, as well as natural gas. As the company’s main focus is energy, it operates alongside research and development of new sources, such as biodiesel.
The privatization of Petrobras would remove the Federal Government’s control over the oil company, opening the initiative to private capital, which would change the entire logistics of the company. Therefore, currently employed workers are willing to strike as a way to defend their interests.
