Shell, Petrobras, and Senai Cimatec Join Forces to Build the Largest Research and Development Complex for Pre-Salt Exploration, the Production Development Laboratory (LDP).

The LDP will allow safe operational conditions similar to those of the Brazilian pre-salt for integrating system tests, evaluating the performance of new equipment before it is used in the field.

The new laboratory will be built within the Senai Cimatec Park, located in the Camaçari Industrial Hub (BA). A total of R$ 254 million will be invested in the LDP, which will be constructed following international standards for qualification and technical specifications of the market.

This way, the oil and gas industry will benefit from the tests conducted, including subsea, topsides, production operations, lifting, and transport of oil from the seabed and processing.

The LDP will consist of a 300-meter deep well and a ‘flow loop’, a closed unit that simulates oil and gas production. The laboratory is expected to be operational in 2024.

Multidisciplinary Technical Team

Completing the infrastructure of the complex, a multidisciplinary technical team of masters and doctors, with expertise in modeling and reliability analysis, advanced engineering and specialized in computational simulations, materials, and failure and process examination, will also be part of the LDP.

The goal is to bring the best professionals to ensure that the laboratory’s development is comprehensive and meets its maximum potential, as the tests conducted in this new laboratory will impact the entire oil and gas sector and can be applied worldwide.

Project Funding

The project is funded with resources from the Research, Development, and Innovation clause of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP). The investment of R$ 254 million represents a significant advancement for Brazilian oil exploration technology.

The complex aims to provide a safe platform to test new technologies and equipment that can be used in the Brazilian pre-salt. The fact that the laboratory is open to the industry in general means that other companies will be able to use the equipment to test their new technologies and equipment, which is also a significant advantage of the project.

The Production Development Laboratory (LDP) represents a major advancement not only for the oil and gas industry but also for Brazilian engineering and technology. The new laboratory will provide a safe platform to test new technologies and equipment, which could bring benefits not only to Brazil but also to the world. Furthermore, the opening of the LDP to other companies could further increase its impact and benefits for the entire industry.
