Battle of Giants: General Electric Is Displaced by Siemens Gamesa, Celebrating the First Energy from Its Wind Turbine, Considered the Largest and Most Powerful on the Planet!
Siemens Gamesa displaces its rival General Electric and reaches a new milestone for wind energy this week. Its offshore wind turbine prototype, the Siemens SG 14-222 DD, set a production record by generating 359 megawatt-hours in a 24-hour period — “the highest power ever produced by a turbine during this time and enough energy to drive 1.8 million km in a mid-sized electric car!”
This marks the connection to the grid for the largest wind turbine in existence on the planet. The SG 14-222 DD “puts to shame” the GE Haliade-X turbine, installed at the Port of Rotterdam, which generated 312 MWh of electricity in 24 hours in November 2020.

The Largest and Most Powerful Wind Turbine on the Planet Has a Capacity of 14 MW, a Rotor of 222 Meters, and Blades 108 Meters Long
This new world record comes less than a year after Siemens Gamesa installed the SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine prototype at its testing center in Østerild, Denmark — in November 2023. The SG 14-222 DD can provide enough power to supply approximately 18,000 households annually.

And how did Siemens Gamesa achieve this? “We went bigger — for better. We improved and updated our proven Direct Drive technology. Raising the rating of our newest turbine to 14 megawatts was made possible by increasing the rotor diameter to 222 meters — using the B108 blades that are 108 meters long. This allows the SG 14-222 DD to offer an increase in Annual Energy Production (AEP) of over 25% compared to its predecessor under similar conditions,” said Andre Dalby, Project Manager of Modules.
Only 90 of These SG 14-236 DD Offshore Wind Turbines Would Be Enough to Cover the Annual Energy Consumption of a City the Size of Amsterdam in the Netherlands!
Dalby continues with some words about the future: “This turbine for me represents the essence of what we do: a cleaner world for future generations. The SG 14-236 DD is the largest turbine we have ever made. It will be key to our future and will be a huge contributor to the world’s energy transition. With just 90 of these SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines, we could cover the annual electricity consumption of a city the size of Amsterdam in the Netherlands!”
Together with the diligent work of everyone involved, this week, Jochen Eickholt, CEO of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, emphasized: “It’s now or never, Europe needs to see the wind industry as strategically important for ensuring energy independence.” There is a push to make this a larger industry commitment in Europe and globally. Siemens Gamesa tweets.
The time to widely support renewable energy, and offshore wind energy more specifically, is now. Global warming and the climate crisis will not wait. People and the economy are ready for it now.
